Description

We are seeking Grounds Workers to oversee the upkeep and enhancement of outdoor spaces across our facilities. The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide range of tasks, from lawn care and landscaping to road maintenance and snow removal. This position requires strong leadership skills, a commitment to excellence, and a hands-on approach to grounds management.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Lawn Care and Landscaping:
    • Mow, trim, dethatch, fertilize, and aerate lawns and fields to ensure they are healthy and well-maintained.
    • Seed, sod, and mulch areas as needed to promote growth and enhance aesthetics.
    • Maintain athletic fields and artificial turf, including marking out boundaries and painting team logos.
    • Weed and mulch landscape beds to keep them tidy and free of debris.
  2. Road and Parking Area Maintenance:
    • Remove concrete, asphalt, and debris while repairing and maintaining secondary roads and parking areas.
    • Clean streets, walks, drains, catch basins, and outdoor areas to prevent hazards and maintain cleanliness.
    • Use appropriate equipment and tools to remove snow and ice from roads, sidewalks, stairs, ramps, driveways, and parking lots.
  3. Irrigation Systems and Tree Care:
    • Maintain irrigation systems to ensure proper watering of lawns, trees, and landscapes.
    • Assist in tree planting, trimming hedges, shrubs, and small trees, and remove dead or unwanted trees using power saws, hand saws, and chippers.
  4. Supervision and Coordination:
    • Supervise temporary workers and student workers engaged in grounds maintenance tasks, ensuring they adhere to safety protocols and quality standards.
    • Coordinate with other departments and crafts as needed to support the organization's mission and goals.
  5. Additional Duties:
    • Apply fertilizers, pesticides, and chemicals to stimulate growth and control weeds, disease, or insect infestation.
    • Assist with moves of furniture and equipment, cleaning docks, and power washing outdoor areas.
    • Use barricades and signs as necessary to ensure safety during assigned tasks.
    • Assist in the movement of freight and large new equipment, including using lifts and other specialized equipment.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Any one or combination totaling six (6) months from the categories below:
    1. Coursework or vocational training in horticulture, landscaping, or a closely related field, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
      • Fifteen (15) semester hours equals six (6) months
    2. Work experience in grounds maintenance, landscape maintenance, nursery, agriculture work, grounds construction, and/or tending to lawns, turfs, trees, flowers, bushes or other shrubberies, ornamental plants, and other grounds-related work.
  3. Valid/current driver’s license as required by the State of Illinois for the type of motor vehicles(s) to be operated by the incumbent.

Preferred Qualifications and Training
Heavy equipment operator, Backhoe, Skid Steer, Excavator, Dump Truck, Excavation Box and Class A CDL ( to be obtained within first year of employment).
