Alfred State College is seeking a financial analyst to join the Business Affairs Office and play a critical role in supporting the financial planning and analysis functions of the institution. This position involves financial data analysis and reporting, assisting with budget development and tracking, and supporting the campus through ad hoc analysis and excellent customer service. Serving in this role the Financial Analyst will have the opportunity to learn finance in a Higher Education setting, provide insight through analysis and reporting to support strategic decision-making, and collaborate with colleagues by participating in and/or leading cross-functional teams in support of campus operations and strategic initiatives.

The position will also support the Alfred State College Development Fund (DF) in the processing of operating transactions, account reconciliations, maintaining accounting procedures and records, and completing analysis and reporting as required by internal and external stakeholders.

Financial Analyst Responsibilities

  • Develop, enhance and maintain monthly and quarterly reporting to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide ad hoc analysis to answer business questions.
  • Perform various account expenditure reconciliations.
  • Support funding committees for allocation of campus assets.
  • Prepare financial reports and variance analyses to provide insight in support of strategic decision making.
  • Assist in the preparation and monitoring of annual budgets and long-term financial plans.
  • Build financial trackers in Excel using historical and projected data.
  • Maintain financial models to support various financial planning activities.
  • Input and manage data in various sources including spreadsheets and databases.
  • Provide financial analysis and insights to support strategic initiatives and projects.
  • Participate in cross-functional committees to evaluate and implement financial strategies.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with various departments and external partners.
  • Communicate financial information clearly and effectively to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Provide training and support to staff on financial policies and procedures.

Development Fund Support Responsibilities

  • Process operating transactions: cash receipts; cash disbursements; accounts payable; accounts/pledges receivable; journal entries.
  • Calculate and record investment earnings and associated fees to individual accounts.
  • Responsible for gift, bank, credit card, investment, and other account reconciliations.
  • Act as liaison to investment managers
  • Supports annual independent financial statement audits.
  • Modify and create reports as requested and assist with the development of new policies as necessary.
  • Prepare annual 1099's and assist with preparation of annual 990 as well as other SUNY / State reporting requirements.

Other Responsibilities

  • Attend education and training programs as appropriate to increase awareness and understanding.
  • Ensure compliance with SUNY policies, state and federal regulations, and accounting standards.
  • Support audit processes by providing necessary financial information and documentation.
  • Participates in defining and improving system processes and projects.
  • Support the Director of Accounting and Controls, Assistant Vice President for Finance and Management and the Controller as required.
  • The role may require occasional travel to various SUNY campuses and external meetings.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in accounting, business administration, or related field and two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Products, with specific experience in Excel.
  • Detail oriented with strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • High ethical standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration or related area.
  • Working knowledge of MIP software, or other not-for-profit accounting software.
  • Familiarity with higher education financial operations and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience working with SUNY.
  • Experience working in teams comprised of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience organizing, managing and working with financial data.
