The Assistant Director of Student Unions at Alfred State College is a member of the Office of Student Engagement and reports to the Director of Student Engagement. This individual will be responsible for developing student unions operations and pre-professional (student) teams on a number of levels. The Assistant Director of Student Unions will provide strategic leadership and management for a pre-professional (student) team as it delivers exceptional customer service related to event planning, promotion, assessment, engaging with students and their club and organizations in union spaces, and coordinating event support for students, campus partners, and the community at large for the use of the facilities and will be responsible for all activities. The student unions on Alfred State Campus consists of the Student Leadership Center, the Pioneer Center, the MacKenzie Commons and the Auditorium in the Orvis Activities Center.

The Assistant Director of Student Unions will work as part of a team within the Office of Student Engagement to fulfill the mission and vision of the office and the College. The college is about to embark on a construction project in one of the student unions and this position will be responsible for helping to create and implement a moving plan consisting of storage, purchasing furniture, and creatively reimagining space utilization on campus and ensuring spaces provide a safe and welcoming environment.

The Assistant Director of Student Unions will assist the Director of Student Engagement in formulating policies and regulations for the use of the student union; supervises specific functions such as operations, reservations, conferences, assisting with orientation, commuter services, volunteer services, or building operations, and will represent the office for all college events. Event Support will consist of managing reservations for all reservable spaces within our Event Management System (EMS), submitting work-orders for facility use, assigning/staffing a team to set-up, track, and support the events, which include indoor and outdoor spaces on campus at various hours.

In addition, the Assistant Director of Student Unions may be responsible for evening and weekend obligations as needed and the supervision of night and weekend managers for the union. Other responsibilities will include but not be limited to supervising a student fees budget allocation, serve as a liaison for faculty senate, hiring, training, and managing a team of pre-professionals (students) with a focus on student development, assisting in the development and supervision of fraternity and sorority life, provide high-level oversight of facility use and reservations with use of EMS, coordination with student clubs and organizations, faculty/staff, tech services, and other users (external parties) of the facilities for event production.

Educational Background:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related area with equivalent experience.

General Experience, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills; clear and effective communication with campus partners and students.
  • Organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple assignments, coordinate projects, and establish procedures for effective information sharing.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate and work effectively with individuals and groups.

College Union:

  • Experience in designing, implementing, and facilitating training in leadership, customer service, and personal development workshops.
  • Experience supervising student employees (pre-professional staff).
  • Strong customer service skills, working with a diverse population.
  • Ability to understand, utilize and adapt to new technology.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and administrative skills.
  • Ability to think creatively for a space and execute design plan.
  • Attention to detail in a physical space.
  • Knowledge and experience of risk assessment principles and budgetary and fiscal skills.
  • Familiarity and experience with Fraternity and Sorority life to serve as an advisor.

Event Management:

  • Experience implementing developmental and social programming in a community or college environment setting.
  • Knowledge of principles and procedures involved in risk assessment.
  • Budgetary and fiscal skills.
  • Ability to assign tasks to team members effectively and monitor their progress.
  • Skills in motivating and inspiring team members to achieve common goals.
  • Ability to manage details simultaneously and ensure logistics are covered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master's degree, preferably in student personnel or related area, with progressive experience working in the administration of a Student Union or related areas as applicable.
