The Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the School of Architecture, Management & Engineering Technology (SAMET), works in partnership with the Dean of the School of Applied Technology, the Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences, and the Dean of Academic Support & Student Success, and reports directly to the Vice President for Academic Affairs. Responsible for oversight and leadership for the School, the Dean manages a budget of about $5 million, 6 academic departments offering 41 programs at the certificate, associate and bachelor's degree levels, and more than 60 faculty and staff. The school encompasses the departments of Architecture & Design, Digital Media & Animation, Business, Computer & Information Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, and Mechanical & Electrical Engineering Technology. Working alongside the faculty in these programs, the Dean is responsible for leading the School in the realizing its mission, vision, and goals related to program development, recruitment, retention, space, and technology needs, including ABET, COSMA, IACBE, and NAAB accreditation processes. Additionally, the Dean interacts with our community college and industry partners, as well as donors, as we seek additional funding for the School through grants, partnerships, and philanthropy. The Dean serves as a member of the President's Council, Dean's Council, Retention Committee, Red Flag team, and the Academic Affairs Collaboration Team.

Successful candidates for this position will have demonstrated experience in the following areas.

Academic planning, program development, assessment, and accreditation

  • A record of collaborative leadership working among different disciplines and departments
  • Demonstrates strong leadership skills and the ability to facilitate implementation of the institutional strategic plan by aligning school goals and mission with institutional priorities
  • Ability to actively manage the academic portfolio in the School and guide and support departments as they review, develop, and expand associate and bachelor's degree programs and micro-credentials
  • Represents the school within SUNY and with regional and national accreditation agencies
  • Assists departments and programs in the School with external accreditation self-studies, reports, and reviews

Faculty & Staff Hiring, Evaluation, and Development

  • Works with faculty on the recruitment and hiring of diverse faculty members, both full-time and part-time, to meet departmental teaching needs
  • Provides mentoring, guidance and feedback to new and continuing faculty and staff members related to their performance at the institution
  • Provides recommendations on faculty and staff contract renewals, promotions, and tenure decisions
  • Partners with the Center for Innovation and Teaching Excellence on professional development opportunities for faculty during Professional Development week and throughout the academic year

Student recruitment, retention, and success

  • Works with Enrollment Management and faculty on the recruitment of students into the academic programs within the school and marketing materials to use with students, families, and external partners
  • Serves as a point of contact within the school for student and family concerns about faculty, classes, or academic decisions
  • Regularly reviews data related to student recruitment, enrollment, retention, and graduation to understand trends, successes, and challenges and uses the data to make informed decisions about process, procedures, and changes that may be needed to facilitate student success
  • Works with Department Chairs on the development & implementation of Enrollment and Retention plans for each of their academic programs

Fiscal Management, Grant Writing, and External Relations

  • Manages fiscal resources of the school including the development and management of the departmental and school level budgets, capital expenditures, equipment and facilities needs, and management of grant funds received by the school
  • Collaborates with Institutional Advancement on cultivation of donors and external partnerships to benefit the School of Architecture, Management, and Engineering Technology
  • Collaborates with the AVP for Grants and Contracts on the identification, application, and implementation of grants to benefit the programs within the School of Architecture, Management, & Engineering Technology
  • Expands and improves the school's technological & teaching facilities through grant and donor supports to facilitate best practices in teaching and learning and to provide and an industry ready workforce
  • Leverages industry partnerships for program review and development, workforce development initiatives, grant opportunities, and recruitment/placement of students


Job Requirements:

Minimum Requirements

  • An earned doctorate
  • Graduate degree in a discipline that is represented in the School of Architecture, Management, & Engineering Technology
  • A distinguished record of teaching with college and university service appropriate for appointment as a tenured full professor in a department within the school
  • At least a 5-year record of increasing responsibility and success as a leader and manager in academic administration within higher education
  • Demonstrated experience in both budget management and securing external funding
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion
  • Demonstrated experience with program level accreditation, NAAB, COSMA, IACBE, or ABET preferred

Preferred Requirements

  • Experience with the SUNY system or a state operated higher educational system in another state
  • Industry experience
  • Ph.D. in a discipline that is represented in the School of Architecture, Management, & Engineering Technology
