Job Role Summary
The Registrar often serves as the first contact patients have with the system. The Registrar adapts activities/behaviors to reflect and ensure adequate service appropriate to the age of the patients served (i.e. neonatal, infant, pediatric, preschool, school-age and adolescent, and adult and geriatric). This role also performs a variety of clerical and patient service duties necessary to maintain efficient flow of operations in the clinic/hospital/ED/office setting.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Proactively contributes to Eskenazi Health's mission: Advocate, Care, Teach, and Serve with special emphasis on the vulnerable population of Marion County
Registers patients by validating demographic information, identification of appropriate payer sources, executing general consent form authorizing treatment and securing and imaging appropriate documents (photo ID, insurance cards, etc.) into OnBase Front Office Scanning
Adheres to all quality and productivity standards defined by the department
Collects prepayment for pending services (when applicable) and co-pays as defined by patient insurances
Reconciles the cash drawer
Ability to work in any Patient Access area
Follows appropriate policies and procedures in production at each area.
Matches and retrieves appropriate patient from EHR
Establishes priorities, meets deadlines, and follows written and verbal instructions
Follows downtime manual processes with little or no supervision
Interacts with local, state, and federal officers and inmates to identify appropriate payer sources
Directs patients to financial counselors when no payer is identified and/or patient has outstanding balance
Create a referral or schedule an appointment with Financial Counseling
Informs patient and/or family of the patient obligation policy
Determines if reason for visit is accident related (worker's compensation, automobile accident)
Accountability for accuracy of data collected and entered in systems
Electronically or telephonically verifies patient's insurance eligibility and benefits
Utilizes Experian system to verify address provided by patient
Interacts with clinical and non-clinical staff in professional, efficient, and friendly manner
Adapts activities/behaviors to reflect and ensure adequate service appropriate to the age of the patients served
Job Requirements
Minimum of one (1) year experience in business, office management or health information management. High School Diploma or (GED with post-secondary education courses or certification in business, computers, and Office Management. Associate's degree preferred
Must complete outpatient registration program and pass the exam with a score of 80% or higher
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Exceptional customer service and patient interviewing skills
Working knowledge of insurance and third-party payers, patient billings and accounts processes
Knowledge and ability to use remote terminals, EHR registration system, Windows systems, and web-based applications
Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of business applications and standard office equipment
Demonstrates a positive demeanor and good oral/written communication skills with the ability to use age appropriate communications, and be professional in both appearance and approach
Must be detail oriented, possess appropriate mathematical skills, and have analytical skills to resolve registration issues
Maintains 98% accuracy on registration data audits
