In addition, the departmental mission or function for EdPro is to manage accepted manuscripts from the raw acquired state to a completed document ready to be published, ensuring that consistent high standards, budgets, and schedules are met.

Summary

Reporting to the Managing Editor, the Associate Editor oversees the editing and composition of the majority of scholarly/professional titles on HUP's three seasonal lists and manages the reprints programs.

Position Description

Production editing: Working closely with book packagers and in-house staff, oversees copyediting and production for up to 25 scholarly/professional titles per year. Responsible for scheduling, quality control, and budget for all assigned titles. Provides detailed instructions to packagers on editorial requirements in line with the publishing plan for each book. Monitors each book's progress from unedited manuscript through to bound books, including copyediting stage, composition, proofreading, and indexing. May personally edit 1-2 manuscripts in-house as time and departmental needs allow. Continually evaluates packagers for quality of work, adherence to schedules, and cost containment. Negotiates economies wherever feasible. Stays abreast of new technologies related to book editing and production.

Reprints: Maintains the database and files for all reprint corrections. Incorporates corrections at the paperback stage or when possible for reprint editions. Coordinates with the production team to ensure updated files are provided on schedule and are archived for future use.

Other duties: Working with the Managing Editor, acquisitions editors, and other departments, coordinates front list metadata in Biblio to ensure accuracy, from the time books are assigned to the upcoming list through published books. Maintains departmental Sharepoint site. Performs other duties as needed to further the mission of the Press and the Editorial Production Department.

Basic Qualifications

Candidates MUST meet the following basic qualifications to be considered for this role:

Five or more years related experience in editorial production. Education may count toward experience. Working knowledge of typography, typesetting methods, graphics software, and printing procedures. Working knowledge of publishing procedures, specifically editorial and production tasks.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

College degree strongly preferred Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to work with a wide variety of people and projects simultaneously, often under pressure. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. Ability to take initiative and adapt to new technologies and procedures. Strong negotiating and mediation skills.

This position has a 3-month orientation and review period.
