The Kempner Institute for the Study of Natural and Artificial Intelligence seeks an Associate Director for Educational Programs. The position will work with faculty across many departments managing graduate, undergraduate, and post-baccalaureate educational programs, including managing and participating in the student selection process. The Associate Director will collaborate with Kempner community members to host events and workshops to educate people on artificial intelligence, machine learning, cognitive sciences, and neuroscience.



The ideal candidate will have higher education and teaching experience in one or more of these fields, as well as a passion for undergraduate and postgraduate education. Candidates are expected to be able to work with a diverse community of faculty, students and staff to build programs that support inclusive educational efforts.



The successful candidate will build on existing Kempner Institute educational programs and leverage the resources and opportunities available across Harvard's educational ecosystem to ensure the best possible experience for the Kempner Institute student and research community.



Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions*):
  • Oversee all aspects of Kempner Institute educational programming including fellowship and training programs for undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, and graduate students.
  • Ensure that educational activities are aligned with the institute's mission and values and that all aspects of program development and implementation are planned, managed, and executed at the highest standards.
  • Direct each program's operations, including all aspects of logistics, faculty relationships, curriculum management, and student experience. Ensure processes support fair and diverse student selection and appointment.
  • Recruit, orient, manage, and mentor staff. Ensure effective workflow and performance management and the promotion of an inclusive and innovative work environment. Manage team resources, time, and projects, ensuring a high level of professionalism, teamwork, and focus on customer service.
  • Serve as the primary Kempner advisor for Kempner post-baccalaureate students. Advise students about courses, professional development, and other related matters.
  • Gather, maintain and share key data on enrollment, content, student performance and participation, and program content. Ensure that metrics related to student application, selection, progress, and future placement are accurately tracked.
  • Work with institute leadership to identify and apply for external support for educational programs, including philanthropic, grant and foundation applications.
  • Develop, coordinate or supervise workshops, bootcamps, and community events focused on professional development, research or related activities. Develop and maintain teaching materials using platforms and tools as appropriate.
  • Potentially teach courses or workshops as determined by field of expertise and the needs of the program.
  • Potentially advise faculty regarding educational strategies, formats and policy as requested.
  • Foster relationships with partner offices at various Harvard schools (e.g., GSAS, SEAS, HMS, and FAS) to increase participation in programs, coordinate offerings, enrollment and student onboarding.
  • Ensure compliance with university policies and procedures and applicable rules and regulations.


Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 7 years' relevant work experience


Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • PhD in a scientific discipline is strongly preferred.
  • Previous experience in a related field such as neuroscience, computational neuroscience, computer science, cognitive psychology, or a related field preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong commitment to continuous process improvement.
  • Some supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to education and student life essential; strong initiative; ability to work with diverse constituencies required.
  • Experience advising students (graduate and/or undergraduate) is highly desirable.
  • This position may hold a concurrent, dependent appointment as Lecturer in a relevant academic department within a school of Harvard.
