Job Description:




SUNY Schenectady County Community College seeks a part-time Information Processing Specialist I (IPS I) for our Library Services Division. This is a competitive **provisional civil service position that reports to the Director of Library Services. The part-time Information Processing Specialist I will perform a variety of library computer-based, customer service, and clerical tasks centered on circulation/reserve desk functions.





Duties and Responsibilities:





  • Assists patrons with circulation transactions;

  • Checks all types of library materials, including equipment, in and out, primarily through use of the library's ALEPH or ILLiad online systems (training will be provided),

  • Responds to occurrences in which the exit control is activated;

  • Processes materials for reserve;

  • Participates in re-shelving materials, shelf reading and stack maintenance.

  • Is responsible for daily opening and closing procedures for the library and circulation area when scheduled during these hours.

  • Provides assistance or referral elsewhere based on type of inquiry. For example:

    • Answers directional questions such as

      • Where do I get my SCCC ID

      • Where is the Student Services office



    • Assists with basic technology needs

      • Verification of network User Name/Password

      • Checking correct password format

      • Refilling paper in printers and copiers

      • Troubleshooting paper jams



    • Answering basic Microsoft Office questions, if familiar with the topic

      • How to print multiple slides on a page

      • How to use spell check

      • How to add a column to a spreadsheet



    • Refers questions to the reference librarian on duty related to

      • Finding books, articles or other library materials

      • Inquiries about course assignments

      • Complex technology questions

      • Other inquiries unrelated to Circulation Desk services





  • Answers the Circulation Desk telephone and responds to circulation related queries, or refers calls to the appropriate Library or college office. Provides back up on phone coverage for the Library Office.

  • Shares in supervisory responsibility for work-study students or volunteers, such as training and oversight for student assistants or volunteers in shelving and shelf-reading.

  • Performs routine periodicals check-in activities.

  • Participates in billing for unreturned materials, including telephoning delinquent borrowers, entering appropriate billing data in library and college online systems, and generating related notices, statistics and reports.

  • Performs related duties as assigned, e.g., word processing of forms and monthly reports, collection inventory, working with staff from other Library units on special projects, etc.






Requirements:





Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics:





  • Computer and keyboarding skills are necessary to do the tasks of this position.

  • Good judgment is required in handling a variety of patron (student, faculty, staff, public) situations.

  • Good interpersonal skills.





Minimum Qualifications:





  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma; OR

  • One year of clerical experience.





Work Schedule:





Fall and Spring Semesters:




Monday - Thursday: 3:00 p.m.- 9:00 p.m. or Monday - Thursday 4:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.





Intersession and Summer Terms:




Monday - Thursday up to six hours each day. Schedule can be flexible.





Residency Requirement:




Must be a Schenectady County resident.

** Provisional appointments may be made to positions in the competitive class if no list of eligible candidates exists. All provisional appointees are subject to passing a competitive examination and be reachable on any list established as a result of such an examination.






Additional Information:





Salary: $19.94/hour (Grade 5, Step 1)
