Job Description:

The Position


Incumbent works under the direction of the Motor Vehicle Inspection Supervisor or designee, conducting vehicle identification inspections on out-of-state and salvage vehicles.


Essential Functions


  • Greet and direct customers seeking a vehicle identification inspection.

  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with clients, supervisors, County employees, elected officials, attorneys, law enforcement, judges, other agencies, and the public.

  • Comply with Civil Service policies and regulations, collective bargaining agreements, County policies, department policies and laws to create a cooperative, safe, respectful and quality work environment.

  • Review ownership records ensuring all pertinent documentation is present and inform customers of additional information needed to process title.

  • Maintain knowledge of vehicle titles from other states and countries.

  • Conduct identification inspections on out-of-state and salvage vehicles (e.g. cars, trucks, motorcycles, semi tractors), ensuring identification and odometer readings match records.

  • Review existing titles, ensuring all required documentation is present.

  • Complete documentation on inspected vehicles, forward for additional processing and fee collection, and inform supervisor of vehicles having questionable odometer readings or Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) issues.

  • Maintain work area, equipment, and official forms in an efficient, clean, and organized manner.

  • Prepare and maintain department documents.

  • Perform clerical and cashiering duties (e.g. NCIC/NCIS database lookup, collect and process fees, balance daily receipts, prepare bank deposits).

  • Conduct on-site and online VIN inspections on out-of-state vehicles for local car dealerships.

  • Direct Motor Vehicle Inspectors work activities and respond to procedural questions during supervisor's absence.

  • Assist in impounding suspect vehicles.

  • Maintain a current job knowledge and job-related skills (e.g. research, meetings, training, webinars, seminars, conferences).

  • Safely operate a motor vehicle when required to travel on County business.

  • Report to work with regular, consistent attendance.

  • Perform other duties as assigned and directed.

Education and Work Experience and Other Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.*

  • Six (6) months of customer service or motor vehicle service experience required.*

  • Vehicle Identification Inspector certification within six (6) months of hire and maintain designation throughout employment required.

  • Complete a pre-employment security clearance check required.

  • Valid driver's license and own transportation upon hire and maintained throughout employment required.

  • Completion of a pre-employment criminal record check and conditional offer drug screen required.

  • *Equivalent combination of education and work experience may be substituted for requirements on a year-for-year basis.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  • Work is generally performed indoors and outdoors. Noise level is usually moderate to loud. Work hours are typically standard day-shift hours; however, schedule may vary (e.g. days, shifts, overtime/extra hours, weekends). Work involves potential exposure to weather conditions (e.g. heat, humidity, cold, rain, snow and wind). Incumbent is exposed to exhaust and other fumes from vehicles and may come in contact with dirt, slush, small rocks and other debris from vehicles.

  • Work requires some physical activity, including extended periods of standing, walking, kneeling, sitting, bending, crouching and reaching, frequent crawling and climbing, and occasional balancing. Work also requires the ability to frequently lift/carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.

  • Required sensory abilities include vision, hearing and touch. Visual abilities, correctable to normal ranges, include close, distance and color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Communication abilities include the ability to talk and hear within normal ranges. Incumbent must possess the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computers and other equipment.
