Overview


We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Branch Accountant with a minimum of 5 years of experience in project cost accounting to manage and support the financial operations of our branch. The ideal candidate will be responsible for handling all accounting functions related to project cost tracking, including purchase orders, accounts payable, accounts receivable, collections, and payroll. This role requires a strong focus on accuracy, adherence to strict deadlines, and the ability to generate weekly reports on project results and backlogs. The Branch Accountant will work closely with project managers, operations teams, and senior leadership to ensure that financial activities are properly recorded and reported.


This position is based out of our Odenton, MD office. This is an in-person role.


Responsibilities



Project Accounting


  • Cost Control


    • Monitoring project expenditures against the budget, identifying cost variances, including tracking project expenses, purchase orders, and other financial commitments.

    • Ensure that all project costs are accurately recorded and allocated in accordance with budget forecasts and contract terms.

    • Monitor project budgets and reconcile variances between actual expenses and projected costs.


  • Progress Reporting


    • Regularly generating reports to communicate project status, key metrics, and potential issues to stakeholders.


  • Risk Management


    • Identifying potential project risks, analyzing their impact, and developing contingency plans.


  • Change Order Management


    • Evaluating proposed changes to the project scope, assessing their impact on cost and schedule, and managing the change order process.


  • Data Analysis


    • Utilizing project management software to analyze data, identify trends, and provide insights to inform decision-making.




Accounts Payable (AP)


  • Process and approve invoices related to project costs, ensuring timely and accurate payments to vendors and suppliers.

  • Maintain vendor records and ensure compliance with contract terms, including payment schedules.

  • Resolve discrepancies between purchase orders, receipts, and invoices.



Accounts Receivable (AR) & Collections


  • Manage and track outstanding project-related invoices and ensure timely collection of payments from clients.

  • Monitor accounts receivable aging reports and follow up on overdue accounts.

  • Collaborate with the sales and project teams to resolve payment issues and disputes.



Payroll


  • Process payroll for project teams, ensuring accurate recording of hours worked, deductions, and overtime.

  • Coordinate with HR and project managers to ensure accurate payroll for field employees and contractors, ensuring compliance with labor laws and union agreements (if applicable).

  • Maintain payroll records and assist with payroll reporting as needed.



Weekly Project Reporting


  • Prepare and submit detailed weekly reports on project financials, including cost tracking, billing status, backlogs, and overall financial performance.

  • Analyze project results and identify any discrepancies or issues that may impact project profitability or deadlines.

  • Provide management with actionable insights to improve project financial outcomes and resolve any issues.



Compliance & Documentation


  • Ensure compliance with company policies, accounting principles, and relevant regulations (e.g., tax laws, labor laws).

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records for all projects.

  • Assist in preparing documentation for audits or reviews, ensuring compliance with internal and external requirements.



Collaboration & Support


  • Work closely with project managers, operations teams, and branch leadership to ensure financial integrity and support project goals.

  • Provide financial insights and recommendations to support decision-making and operational efficiency.

  • Support branch and corporate accounting teams with month-end and year-end closing activities as needed.



Other Duties as Assigned


  • Assist with ad-hoc projects, reporting, or other tasks as needed to support branch operations and finance functions.




Qualifications



Education


  • Associate's degree or higher in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

  • Professional certifications (e.g., CPA, CMA) are a plus but not required.



Experience


  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting or finance, with a focus on project cost accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll.

  • Prior experience in a project-based industry (construction, engineering, or similar) is highly preferred.

  • Strong understanding of project cost accounting and financial reporting.



Technical Skills


  • Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel.

  • Experience with project management software or ERP systems is a plus.

  • Advanced knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting standards.



Skills and Abilities


  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in financial recordkeeping.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines.

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive financial information with discretion.

  • Understanding of project management methodologies

  • Financial acumen and budgeting experience

Additional Information



Salary Range: $65,000 - $85,000 per year


Actual salary will be based on a variety of factors including relevant internal and external experience, knowledge, skills, scope of job, geographical location or other factors permitted by law
