Job Description:

Zurich E&S is currently looking for an Underwriting Portfolio Manager reporting directly to the Head of Zurich E&S Casualty. Zurich E&S Casualty is a new team that combines the Zurich E&S Excess Casualty team with the new Zurich E&S Primary Casualty team. This position will be responsible for overseeing portfolio management for the underwriting team, developing and overseeing streamlined casualty underwriting referrals, managing referrals (as needed), helping to improve and streamline underwriting processes within E&S Casualty, and providing technical guidance and referral recommendations as a subject matter expert. Additional responsibilities include mitigating portfolio exposure by understanding emerging issues, working with Zurich E&S's Chief Underwriting Officer in the execution of underwriting quality reviews and the development and implementation of reusable E&S Casualty training resources to streamline efficient onboarding and upskilling of managers, underwriters and ASAs.

The E&S Casualty Underwriting Portfolio Management position will be expected to travel as necessary to support the internal needs of the team. The position is a critical role and requires advanced knowledge of all casualty industry segments. Collaboration across Zurich E&S and North American underwriting leadership will be required.

Responsibilities Include:


  • Contribute to the strategic development of underwriting processes including the streamlining of casualty operations, systems maintenance suggestions, and refining processes to accomplish E&S Casualty business goals and speed to market efforts.

  • Determine emerging casualty issues (internal and external) that may be relevant to E&S Casualty's current and future business needs, ensure strategies, guidelines and processes contemplate all relevant findings.

  • Manage Casualty Underwriting Manager desk reviews to maintain underwriting quality and coordinate with the Zurich E&S CUO in the performance of Underwriting Quality Reviews.


  • Work with E&S Head of Casualty on qualitative review processes across E&S Casualty.

    • Quarterly Review of Management Staff: Accounts underwritten or reviewed and approved due to authority restrictions in the field.

    • Work with RM to ensure timely response and action plan for all UQA violations.



  • Develop and implement reusable E&S Casualty training resources to streamline efficient onboarding of managers, underwriters, and ASAs.


  • Oversee E&S Casualty underwriting portfolio management, including monitoring SBU KPIs, including but not limited to profitability and growth to identify how different scenarios may impact the business.

    • LOB and Regional views.

    • Rate Change Outliers



  • Oversee casualty operations to ensure strategic upskilling of ASA staff to provide more technical support to field underwriters, with structured skill assessments that will facilitate endorsement and/or SMART renewal authority.

  • Provide technical guidance to E&S Casualty and referral recommendations as a subject matter expert to support expediated resolutions of the most complex casualty risk exposure and develop precedents to improve customer service and SBU best practices.

  • Perform referrals on individual accounts as needed.

  • Verify the calculated risk levels and provide reporting to Zurich E&S CUO to ensure that E&S underwriting practice and policy remains in line with the organization´s policies.

  • Liaison with casualty practice leaders for our major wholesale partners to understand marketplace trends and product developments.

  • Collaborate across Zurich support functions in the execution of the Zurich E&S strategy

  • Additional contributions and/or projects may be assigned on an ad hoc basis to meet the needs of the business.

This role will be filled at either an AVP or VP Underwriter level. The hiring manager will determine the appropriate level based upon the selected applicant's experience and skillset relative to the qualifications listed for this position.

Basic Qualifications AVP Level:


  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 7 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area.

  • OR

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 14 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area

  • OR

  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 5 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area

  • OR

  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 12 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area

  • AND

  • Experience with Microsoft Office

OR

Basic Qualifications VP Level:


  • Bachelors Degree and 9 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area.

  • OR

  • Bachelors Degree and 18 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area

  • AND

  • Experience in E&S Casualty Underwriting

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Advanced and in-depth knowledge of casualty product terms and construction

  • Experience in developing or managing casualty pricing methodologies

  • Superior skills in internal relationship building, active listening and win-win negotiation

  • Strong executive presence and the ability to interact with the C-Suite

  • Experience developing and training talent.

  • Innovative and creative thinking to reposition and market leading E&S insurance carrier.

  • Strong casualty underwriting experience, including at least 20 years of casualty underwriting experience and at least 10 years of experience in E&S.

  • Portfolio management experience within primary or excess casualty, including at least 5 years of direct portfolio oversight on a regional or national basis.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Risk Management or related field

Additional rewards may encompass short-term incentive bonuses and merit increases. We encourage candidates with salary expectations beyond the provided range to apply, as they will be considered based on their experience, skills, and education. The salary indicated represents a nationwide market range and has not been adjusted for geographic differentials pertaining to the location where the position may be filled. The combined salary range for this position is $172,000.00 - $269,000.00. The proposed salary range for the AVP is $172,000.00- $222,000.00, with short-term incentive bonus eligibility set at 20%. For the VP is $209,000.00- $269,000.00, with short-term incentive bonus eligibility set at 25%.
