About the Role: The Health Information Management (HIM) Manager is responsible for leading the performance and operations of HIM services across multiple hospitals in a healthcare system. This role encompasses overseeing staffing, compliance, quality standards, and productivity for Health Information Management, ensuring the department meets the needs of patient care, business operations, and regulatory requirements. Collaborating with administrators, medical staff, and cross-functional teams, the HIM Manager establishes workflows and solves operational challenges to achieve organizational goals.
Responsibilities:
Leadership & Staff Management:
Recruit, hire, train, schedule, and manage HIM department staff in alignment with organizational policies.
Conduct performance evaluations, provide coaching, and address disciplinary actions as needed.
Compliance & Performance Monitoring:
Ensure adherence to health information regulations (HIPAA, local/system/legal compliance).
Implement and monitor quality and productivity standards; prepare reports and present performance data.
Operations Management:
Lead daily operations for HIM functions, including system maintenance, workflows, medical record accuracy, and timely availability.
Collaborate with coding, clinical documentation improvement, RAC, and PFS processes to support the revenue cycle.
System Expertise & Problem-Solving:
Serve as an expert in HIM technology systems; triage issues and lead system implementation or upgrades.
Partner with healthcare teams to address challenges and implement solutions.
Advisor & Resource:
Act as a liaison to hospital leaders and medical staff; establish workflows for record completion and content accuracy.
Participate in committees and support university HIM internship programs, where applicable.
Data Analysis & Reporting:
Prepare, analyze, and distribute reports to communicate HIM outcomes.
Manage department budgets, assist in capital requests, and align with financial indicators like DNFB goals.
Business & Project Collaboration:
Support leadership with assessments, recommendations, and follow-up on new technologies, projects, goals, and initiatives.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management (HIM), with RHIA credential preferred.
Open to other bachelor's degrees with 5+ years HIM department experience or associate's degree in HIM with RHIT credential and management experience.
In-depth knowledge of HIM operations, hospital EMRs/EHR systems, HIPAA regulations, revenue cycle operations, and quality/safety standards.
Proven skills in data analysis, performance monitoring, communication, leadership, and Microsoft Office suite.
