Job Description:

We seek a field Instrumentation Technician to work at the Oklahoma Geological Survey and join our team that operates a real-time seismic network with more than 90 stations across the state. The field Instrumentation Technician is responsible for field data acquisition, and field equipment maintenance. The field technician is expected to work long hours in the field during data acquisition campaigns and/or servicing field stations. The field technician would be required to travel 80% of the normal working week but there would be no requirement for overnight travel, except in rare circumstances.


Essential Duties:



  • Monitors, maintains, and troubleshoots issues with equipment.

  • Ensures safety of the work environment.

  • Identifies data errors and problems via quality assurance methodologies.

  • Supervises field operations involving students or university researchers.

  • Assists in the installation and preventive maintenance of field infrastructure, including telecommunications and mechanical equipment.

  • Assists in calibration lab operations.

  • Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.

Required Education:  High School diploma or GED, AND:




  •  18 months of experience with instrumentation in a research or laboratory setting, engineering, or electronics.




Skills:



  • Able to communicate well and build rapport quickly with students, faculty, and staff

  • Able to work well with interdepartmental teams and initiatives

  • Experience with basic electrical systems, electric power tools, and hand tools

  • Read and understand complex written materials such as blueprints, metrics, or technical manuals

  • Detail oriented for accuracy of data and information

  • Highly organized and able to handle multiple projects and deadlines


Certifications:




  • Valid Driver's License 




Working Conditions:



  • Physical:

    • Ability to engage in repetitive motions.

    • Ability to walk for short or extended time periods.



  • Environmental:

    • The work environment is mainly field based.

    • Works outside for long periods in all weather conditions.

    • May be required to travel.




Departmental Preferences:



  • Maintain sensitive seismograph equipment in a laboratory setting and keep an accurate inventory of equipment and supplies

  • Prepare for and install seismometers in outdoor environments. Troubleshoot and repair basic electrical equipment, seismometers, field laptops, GPS receivers, cellular modems, and other equipment. Previous work experience troubleshooting equipment in outdoor environments would be highly desirable.

  • Design and fabricate systems for future field deployments. Organize and direct personnel and students in the field.

  • Maintain and cultivate a safety-oriented approach to working in the field.

  • Contribute to successful team project management by demonstrating initiative in tackling field tasks, while communicating project objectives and milestones.

  • Maintain thorough communication with landowners. Participate in public outreach during outreach events or other organized and ad-hoc opportunities to engage with the public.
