Description: Position Summary
The Hog Island Camp Assistant will aid in the general operation of Hog Island Audubon Camp. S/He/They will report directly to the Hog Island Facility and Operations Manager and work in coordination with the kitchen staff, maintenance staff, and programming staff. Under direction from the Kitchen team, the Camp Assistant will assist with acquiring and transporting food orders from farms and distributors, and transport of refuse, and recycling to mainland by boat. S/He/They may assist in the general kitchen operation including food prep and cleaning and will work closely with a team of dedicated FOHI (Friends of Hog Island 501c3) volunteers who will be aiding the kitchen and maintenance teams. They will be responsible for monitoring elements of the facility and light maintenance such as painting and grounds keeping, including mowing and watering the gardens. They will assist in keeping camp vans and boats clean, safe, and filled with fuel. They will run boat shuttles throughout the week and on-board our instructor teams on Saturdays. They will transport camp participants in vans as part of the camp program. They will help maintain and operate the Hog Island Nature Store, including inventory, opening, and staffing the shop as needed. Hog Island staff must adhere to health and safety protocols and the Camp Assistant will be responsible to abide by these protocols.

The Camp Assistant is preferred to live in housing on Hog Island in order to perform the functions of this position. Audubon will provide the Camp Assistant with a room with shared bath. Meals are provided on Hog Island when the kitchen is in operation. The work schedule is 40 hours per week, and the day revolves around keeping the camp operations in order through customer service and the meal service and programming schedule. Weekend work is required. Some weeks will not include a full schedule and full hours may not be expected all weeks.

This role is on-site based out of Hog Island, in Bremen, ME.

Compensation:


$15.50 / hour


Essential Functions
  • Assist with local acquisition of food and supplies, including pickups from local farms, grocery stores, and deliveries, including ferrying groceries and supplies across from the mainland;

  • Interface with FOHI volunteers as necessary to ensure delivery and task completion;

  • Help maintain a clean and healthy working environment, including regular removal of trash, recycling and compost;

  • Assist Kitchen staff with food prep and cleaning tasks;

  • Maintain camp grounds through routine mowing and watering of the gardens;

  • Operate camp boats for weekly shuttle needs, including all Saturday boat operations;

  • Perform light maintenance including painting, cleaning, and assisting with larger maintenance projects;

  • Oversee the Hog Island Nature Store including sales of merchandise, inventory, and restocking.

  • Aid in orientation and transportation of arriving and departing instructors and participants.

  • Participate in weekly meetings with the Hog Island staff.

  • Qualifications and Experience
  • Candidate preferred to be available to work from May 5- October 3, 2024. This is a seasonal role.

  • Must be 18 years old or older with a valid Driver’s License;

  • Preferred candidate will be able to stand for extended periods of time and able to lift at least 50 lbs (repeatedly throughout the day), as well as walk up to two miles at a time (with or without accommodation);

  • Sense of humor, strong work ethic, and flexibility are of paramount importance to this position;

  • Available for required weekend work;

  • Sincere interest in birds and environmental issues is encouraged, but not required;

  • Prior experience in communal live/work spaces preferred;

  • Property maintenance, retail sales, work with volunteers preferred;

  • Must be able to pass a federal background check;

  • Experience with or desire to learn use of small motor or row boats required.
