The department of Facilities Management intends to hire an HVAC Technician at either the HVAC Technician I, HVAC Technician II, or HVAC Technician III classification based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. The University of Iowa Facilities Management is seeking a highly motivated candidate to work as an HVAC Technician. The person in this role will operate, maintain, and service building and departmental heating ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. This position coordinates work with other trades and must be certified to perform work to levels set forth by the Environmental Protection Agency. The person in this role must be able to diagnose complex equipment problems, use sophisticated diagnostic equipment and EPA approved refrigerant reclaim equipment.
This position is performed fully on campus.
Duties to Include:
HVAC Technician I
Maintain and troubleshoot air-moving, heating, cooling, humidification and filtering equipment and systems such as fans, heat pumps, gas unit heaters, forced airequipment, furnaces, radiant heating, condensers, compressors, pumps, fan coil units, rooftop package air conditioning units, computer room cooling units, etc.
HVAC Technician II
Maintain and troubleshoot environmental systems equipment and components such as air conditioning equipment, chillers, condensers, pumps, fume hoods, autoclaves, environmental chambers, scientific equipment, cascade cooling units, process water systems, compressors, and other pneumatic and computerized controls. Maintains cooling tower equipment, plate-frame heat exchangers, cooling water treatment equipment, heating systems (all fuel types) to include boilers, unit heaters, furnaces, radiant heating, heat pump systems (geothermal and air source) and other emerging technology equipment/systems.
HVAC Technician III
Operate, inspect, maintain, and repair chillers, chilled water equipment and systems to include associated auxiliary equipment such as air compressors, air dryers, pumps, chiller tube bundles, heat exchangers, and other emerging technology equipment and systems.
Other Duties to Include:
Maintain and troubleshoot complex Mechanical System.
Repair/replace defective parts and equipment.
Operate computerized building environmental automation systems that control heating and cooling systems.
Use specialized testing equipment for diagnostic evaluation.
Read and interpret prints, schematics, and diagrams.
About Facilities Management:
Facilities Management (FM) is a service unit of approximately 500 employees who work behind the scenes, 24 hours a day, serving the University of Iowa as stewards of our beautiful Iowa City and Oakdale campus. FM staff coordinate campus master planning, manage design & construction, and maintain & clean the buildings & grounds.
Schedule: Monday through Friday,8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Due to the critical operational needs of the department, this position may be required to work overtime and participate in the Facilities Management Standby Program.

Starting pay rate for the three classification levels:
HVAC Technician I: $54,413.28
HVAC Technician II: $59,487.12
HVAC Technician III: $64,999.44
*A higher starting pay rate may be requested based on exceptional qualifications.
HVAC Technician I Minimum Eligibility Requirements
Four years of experience in refrigeration, heating or air conditioning work, including apprenticeship; and
Obtains refrigeration certificate of at least type 2 within first six months of employment.
Special Qualifications:
Valid driver's license and ability to meet and maintain UI Fleet Safety Standards.
Desired Qualifications:
Previous soldering experience
Previous Commercial / industrial HVAC experience
Project work knowledge and use of hand tools, power tools, and test equipment
Demonstrate basic computer skills
Experience using computerized maintenance management system (CMMS)
Hydronic license
Preventative maintenance and troubleshooting experience
Ability to communicate effectively
Ability to follow oral and written instructions

Six years of experience in temperature and computerized building environmental automation systems, refrigeration or air conditioning work, including apprenticeship, or has two years of experience in computerized building environmental automation systems and meets the minimum eligibility requirements of ESM I; or four years' experience in above plus Journeyman's license; and
Has refrigeration certificate of at least type 2.
Prefer 2 years of college/trade school

Eight years of experience in computerized building environmental automation systems, refrigeration or air conditioning work, including apprenticeship, with two years of experience in evaluating and recommending system optimization changes, or two years of experience in evaluating and recommending system optimization changes and meets the minimum eligibility requirements of ESM II; and
Has refrigeration certificate of at least type 2.
Journeyman license required
Prefer 2 years of college/trade school
Special Qualifications:
Valid driver's license and ability to meet and maintain UI Fleet Safety Standards.
