Role description:

Arcadis is seeking a Senior Resident Engineer to join our team for a significant rail tunnel project in the New York / New Jersey area. In this role, you will coordinate with geotechnical engineers, environmental specialists, and regulatory authorities to assess spoil characteristics, conduct soil testing, and determine appropriate disposal methods for excavated materials.

Role accountabilities:


  • Develop and implement a comprehensive spoils management plan in compliance with environmental regulations, project specifications, and safety requirements to ensure proper handling, transportation, and disposal of tunnel excavation materials.
  • Monitor excavation activities, spoil stockpiles, and material reuse opportunities to minimize waste generation, optimize resource utilization, and reduce environmental impacts.
  • Supervise spoil handling operations, including loading, hauling, and off-site disposal activities, to ensure compliance with waste management protocols and disposal permits.
  • Conduct regular inspections of spoil management facilities, transportation routes, and disposal sites to assess compliance with safety regulations, environmental standards, and project requirements.
  • Collaborate with project stakeholders, subcontractors, and haulage contractors to coordinate spoil removal schedules, ensure timely spoil disposal, and mitigate potential risks associated with spoil handling.
  • Prepare spoil management reports, documentation for regulatory compliance, and material tracking records to maintain a transparent and accountable spoil management process throughout the project.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in construction engineering, with a focus on spoil management, environmental compliance, or waste management in tunnel construction projects.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license

Key Skills and Attributes:

  • Strong knowledge of environmental regulations, waste disposal practices, and soil classification methods related to construction spoil materials.
  • Experience with geotechnical testing procedures, spoil characterization, and spoil reuse strategies is preferred.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills to effectively manage spoil management activities in a dynamic construction environment.
  • Certification in environmental engineering, waste management, or related field is a plus.

Arcadis offers benefits for full time and part time positions. We offer nine paid holidays and 20 days PTO that accrue per year. The salary range for this position is $190,000 - $240,000. Actual salaries will vary and are based on several factors, such as experience, education, budget, internal equity, project and location.
