Job Description SummaryThe Medical Director will be responsible for overseeing clinical care, a wide range of health services, supporting accreditation processes, and ensuring that the highest standards of medical care are maintained. This role requires a deep commitment to evidence-based practice and a collaborative approach to healthcare, working closely with a team of professionals across various disciplines.
The Medical Director is a senior leader within Student Health and Counseling at the University of Pennsylvania. They lead and inspire a dedicated team of clinicians that deliver high-quality medical care for a diverse community of university students. This is an internally facing position overseeing medical care services within Student Health and Counseling including, acute care, primary care, sports medicine, gynecology, sexual health, gender affirming care, travel medicine, nutrition, and allergy services. This position requires a strong collaborative spirit and a holistic perspective to facilitate excellent working relationships within the entire medical team that brings together clinicians, nurses, medical assistants, behavioral health consultants and administrative support staff.

Job Responsibilities
Clinical Care
Provide limited clinical care to students for at least 3 sessions per week, including face-to-face medical care in both acute and follow-up settings.
Provide clinical consultation and chart review, patient correspondence, referral as appropriate for specialty and diagnostic care.
Clinical Operations
Plan and develops health programs for all students in the University community, including, but not limited to, preventative medical services, chronic care and emergent care.
Establish appropriate diagnostic, and therapeutic services for the students.
Maintain ongoing review of the medical needs, trends, and delivery of primary medical care to students.
Recommend and implement changes in the delivery of health care, staffing patterns, and in services provided, to improve the quality, the cost effectiveness, and the timeliness of services provided.
Evaluates the performance of physicians and nurse practitioners periodically and as required.
Clinical Administration
Support accreditation processes.
Initiate and complete quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives in collaboration with the Director of Nursing Services.
Is available on-call during nights/weekends/holidays for clinical and administrative matters that cannot be adequately addressed by designated on-call front-line staff.
Implement HR-related actions associated with hiring, development, and discipline of staff members according to campus policies and procedures.
Work directly with medical and administrative staff to develop staffing plans for the academic year and break periods, balancing the need needs of staff and patients with timely access to care.
Solicit patient feedback and address service-wide issues relating to the quality of patient care and patient satisfaction.
Review patient charts to ensure clinical staff are processing charts based on EHR procedures with accuracy, completeness, and minimal errors.
Implement a peer-review process to determine if appropriate treatment is being provided.
Qualifications
Education
Must have a medical doctorate (MD) or doctor of osteopathic medicine (DO) from an accredited university and must have completed an accredited post-doctoral residency program. Board certification in the area of Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Pediatrics is required. Must be eligible to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Must have a current DEA, NPI, and at least BLS certification.
Experience
Must have at least seven (7) years of clinical experience that includes caring for adolescents and young adults, and must have at least five (5) year's experience in a management or supervisory role or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience in accreditation processes is preferred.
Skills
Must display leadership and management skills as well as critical and analytical thinking. Must have superior written, oral, and interpersonal communication abilities. Must demonstrate excellent decision-making and problem-solving skills. Must be highly organized and able to deal effectively with various data sources. Attention to detail is critical. Must be able to provide leadership to medical professionals and paraprofessionals. Must be familiar with the development of policies and procedures. Must be able to work cooperatively with a variety of individuals, exhibit appropriate sensitivity to others, and interface effectively with students, staff, and administrators. Must demonstrate effective conflict resolution skills.
Knowledge
Must have extensive knowledge in operating electronic health records software (Epic preferred). Must have extensive knowledge of primary care services and ambulatory health care best practices (college health preferred). Must have knowledge of quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives in healthcare.
Must have an affinity for a diverse student population in a college setting and support a mission of student-centered care for students during their academic journey. Relatedly, must show knowledge of academic issues and institutional health and wellness requirements.
