Engineering Manager


Charlotte, NC - hybrid



Summary of the role



Reporting directly to the North America Engineering Director, the purpose of this position is to provide leadership and guidance to the Engineering teams responsible for hydro turbine, generator, field engineering and mechanical power system (MPS) design and project execution support.


The candidate will foster team collaboration, mentoring of team members, and communication with company stakeholders to ensure support of external and internal customers (PM, Manufacturing, Quality, Procurement, Site Operations, H&S, Sales).


Direct reports include team leads and a growing work force of 20 engineers and technicians located in Charlotte, NC; Spokane, WA; and Morelia, Mexico.


The following responsibilities form the core of this role:



  • Human Resources Management:
    • Secure the right talent, capacity and competence levels;
    • Set team leads individual goals and objectives.
    • Conduct performance evaluations, facilitate development, and implement corrective measures when necessary.
    • Plan and manage salary structures.
    • Prevent or resolve potential conflicts within the team and with other departments.
  • Employee Engagement and Motivation:
    • Foster a high level of engagement and motivation among employees. Develop and foster a culture of accountability and collaboration.
  • Task and Priority Management:
    • Plan and manage the department's workload effectively.
    • Assign tasks and set priorities for team leads in coordination with internal customers (projects) and upper management.
    • Manage Engineering KPIs;
  • Project Execution:
    • Assist sales to prepare engineering budget estimation and execution strategy.
    • Evaluate and raise potential execution risk
    • Monitor and follow up on budget, execution and KPIs.
    • Maintain good understanding of project progress
  • Budget Management:
    • Oversee cost center budgeting (investment plans and request) and control liquidations.
  • Tools and Processes:
    • Evaluate tools and processes, standardize work practices.
    • Ensure adherence to the engineering processes, audit for correct application.
    • Develop and deploy improvement initiatives and organizational changes as needed.
    • Manage interfaces with other functions such as procurement, installation, and quality assurance.

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering;
  • Located or willing to relocate in Charlotte, NC;
  • Solid experience and track record in leading Engineering design teams;
  • Solutions focused while managing the needs of both internal and external customers;
  • Strong leadership skills;
  • Excellent written and oral communication abilities;
  • Ability to manage several tasks simultaneously;
  • Ability to assess competencies, develop employees with a coaching approach;
  • Business skills (Administration, Finance, understanding of strategic processes);
  • Knowledge of MS Office suite, and relevant IT tools;
  • 10-15% travel domestically and abroad as required;
  • Experience in refurbishment or design of hydroelectric equipment or in design and repair of heavy mechanical structure (pulp and paper, mining, shipyard, etc.), highly preferred;
  • Professional Engineer license, preferred.
