A Day in the Life
This is an exciting opportunity to join Medtronic's Structural Heart business unit to work on emerging markets to treat Mitral and Tricuspid diseases, delivering therapies to our patients and driving high revenue growth business. The manager will lead a dedicated team will work on the development and expansion of our transcatheter mitral and tricuspid valve replacement systems, with a focus on delivery systems, accessories and procedural development.
The Engineering Manager demonstrates leadership in support of medical device products developed and manufactured to exceed customer expectations. This role acts as an influential manager within a matrix organization to a team of skilled engineers in a product development setting and provides strong leadership to realize new products, manage talent, drive Design, Reliability and Manufacturability (DRM), design expertise, and development productivity. This individual will apply proven communication skills, problem-solving skills, and knowledge of best practices to guide their team on issues related to the design and development of medical devices.

A Day in the Life


  • Set clear objectives, evaluate progress against objectives, and instill performance-oriented culture with a focus on accountability.

  • Provide resource allocation guidance to the engineering group through analysis of current and future workload and skill availability.

  • Assure the integration of Design, Reliability and Manufacturability (DRM) principles into engineering projects through coaching, training and practice.

  • Prioritize activities with stakeholders based on strategic and tactical importance to the organization.

  • Develop an innovative, career-development focused team with high level of performance and accountability

  • Partner with appropriate stakeholders to attract, ensure engagement, develop and retain R&D talent within the business.

  • Maintains an environment of high expectations and accountability while driving functional excellence.

  • Supports new product design using a systems engineering approach along with advanced design techniques, in-vivo modeling and simulation of prosthetic devices in native anatomy.

  • Helps generate leading-edge knowledge of prototyping and methods for design and manufacturing.

  • Will lead cross-functional site initiatives to improve design processes, increase the knowledge of these processes in development and lower the level of burden associated with legacy processes

  • Leads and ensures achievement of project objectives and milestones with initially complex or undetermined outcomes.

  • Contributes to decision-making using personal expertise, customer input, and feasibility assessment.

  • Have advanced understanding of statistics, functional modeling, design risk analysis and Technical Drawing Reviews

  • Actively mentors, coaches, and ensures career development plans are in place for direct reports.

  • Understands and complies with company policies & procedures and external standards & guidance.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.


  • Plans, directs and implements all aspects of the company's design and development of new medical device products or software systems.

  • May develop, evaluate, implement and maintain technical quality assurance and control systems or reliability systems and standards pertaining to materials, techniques, or company products.

  • Oversees the investigation and evaluation of existing technologies.

  • Guides the conceptualization of new methodologies, materials, machines, processes or products.

  • Directs the development of new concepts from initial design to market release.

  • Manages feasibility studies of the design to determine if capable of functioning as intended.

  • Monitors documentation maintenance throughout all phases of research and development.

  • Organizes the coordination of activities with outside suppliers and consultants to ensure timely delivery.

  • Selects, develops and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements


  • BS degree and minimum of 5 years relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 3 years relevant experience

  • Track record of developing and implementing broad improvement initiatives

  • Demonstrated communication skills, both verbal and written

Nice to Have


  • Product design related to catheters, accessories, and procedures

  • Product design related to cardiovascular products.

  • Cross-functional project team experience.

  • Industry knowledge in implantable medical devices.

  • Proven ability in influencing cross functional peer colleagues

  • Experienced in working with large, multi-site, matrix organizations.

  • Experience with Design, Reliability and Manufacturability (DRM), Six Sigma Black Belt or an equivalent

  • Proven track record of developing engineering solutions for complex problems

  • Strong systems engineering skills

  • Experience and working knowledge of FDA regulations/ISO standards for medical devices

  • Ability to manage the use of laboratory/facility space and equipment in a safe and compliant manner

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$152,000.00 - $228,000.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance , Health Savings Account , Healthcare Flexible Spending Account , Life insurance, Long-term disability leave , Dependent daycare spending account , Tuition assistance/reimbursement , and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
