Job Description:

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics department of Radiology is seeking a Physician Assistant to perform direct patient care including diagnostic and therapeutic services with physician supervision. Within the Physician Assistant (PA)/Physician relationship, PAs exercise autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided. Assist in educating healthcare students, residents, and fellows as they rotate through the respective departments and divisions. To assist in research endeavors as appropriate.


Position Duties and Responsibilities:


The PA, after demonstrating competency and under the guidance, supervision, and discretion of the supervising physician, will perform procedures including, but not limited to the following:

  • Direct pre procedural preparation and postprocedural care of patients undergoing diagnostic and interventional examinations; diagnostic examinations including fluoroscopy, ultrasound, computed tomography, nuclear medicine, mammography, PET/CT, and magnetic resonance imaging
  • Perform and interpret fluoroscopic procedures and ultrasound examinations (angiographic and interventional)
  • Assisting Interventional Radiology faculty in growing and expanding our pediatric interventional services
  • Competency in the principles of practice-based learning and improvement by participation in departmental QA/QI initiatives.
  • Core competencies in angiographic and interventional (arterial and venous) surgical techniques.
  • Obtain medical history and perform physical examination
  • Obtain procedural consent, perform or assist in procedures, and responsible for charting and dictation
  • Fluoroscopic procedures (static and dynamic)
  • Ultrasound, Computed Tomography, or Fluoroscopic guided biopsies
  • Ultrasound, Computed Tomography, or Fluoroscopic drainages and drainage catheter placements
  • Protocoling exams
  • Assess, assist, diagnose and treat medical symptoms or findings
  • Assist in delivery of services to patients requiring continued care
  • Refer patients to appropriate specialty and subspecialty physicians as indicated by the patients' symptoms and/or medical state
  • Evaluate, treat, and institute procedures essential to providing an appropriate response to emergency medical problems
  • Maintain awareness of health facilities, agencies and resources in order to facilitate the appropriate referral of patients
  • Assist in the ordering of drugs and supplies, record keeping and maintenance of equipment
  • Admit patients to hospital or health care facility as directed
  • Order diets and post-procedure care instructions
  • Order medications and administer drugs
  • Direct other medical personnel and health professionals in the execution of patient care
  • Perform duties appropriate to a physician's practice
  • Participate in educating fellows, residents and medical students of various programs
  • Assist with on-call schedule, order sets, dictation and patient discharge instructions
  • Evaluate radiographic medical images, review preliminary reports and images
  • Prepare technical reports that will be reviewed and signed off by the supervising physician
  • Participate in patient management, including ordering of additional imaging procedures, following review with the supervising physician
  • Assist with and participate in clinical research and/or trials
  • May set up the research design, coordinate the research and tabulate and analyze the results
  • Participate in committees within the division, department, College of Medicine and University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics
  • Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the public

Supervision received:


Supervision is received by a physician certified by the Board of Medical Examiners.


Supervision exercised:


Functional and administrative supervision may be exercised over support staff and students.

When supervision is exercised over a resident or fellow, the identity of the attending faculty must be readily available to each trainee, with direct supervision defined as physically available within the hospital's parameters. There must be a structured chain of responsibility and accountability as it relates to supervision of patient care and must be communicated to the trainee.


Percent of Time: 100%




Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 - 5:00pm, may require weekend and night call coverage responsibilities as indicated

Education Required

  • Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which include graduation from an accredited PA educational Program



Required Qualifications

  • Certification by the NCCPA
  • One to three years of relevant working experience
  • Previous experience with computer order entry, use of order sets and protocols
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Sterile technique and infection prevention experience
  • Strong clinical skills
  • BLS certification
  • History of building interdepartmental relationships and exceptional teamwork.
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position for an extended period of time for procedures.
  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Previous experience in radiology
  • Previous experience working in an academic medical center
  • Understanding of safe work practices in the radiology area
  • Active Iowa Board of Pharmacy Certificate of Registration for Iowa Controlled Substances Act is desired
  • Active Controlled Substance Registration Certificate through the Department of Justice (DEA) is desired
  • ACLS certification
  • PALS certification
