Position Overview
The Electrical Engineering Technician applies principles and techniques of electrical engineering to construct, evaluate, and modify test sets, product prototypes, subsystems, fixturing, optical assemblies and similar items in support of SubCom's product development and manufacturing. Works closely with development engineers performing measurements, equipment setup, cabling and other hands-on activities. Performs lead-free and leaded soldering (component replacement, circuit modification, board repair) on surface-mount printed wiring board assemblies to IPC standards. Inspects soldering and assembly quality on prototype boards received from contract manufacturers. Performs fusion spices on single-mode optical fibers to assemble optical subsystems. Creates custom cable harness assemblies for equipment interconnect. Designs and constructs custom enclosures for test fixtures and other assemblies. Maintains stock of common electrical and mechanical parts. Researches sources for electrical components and places orders.
Responsibilities
Works with electrical engineers to evaluate performance of design prototypes.
Performs assembly, cabling, and evaluation of custom test sets.
Performs low-loss fusion spices on single-mode optical fiber.
Assembles breadboard designs.
Modifies and repairs surface-mount printed wiring board assemblies.
Supports lab evaluation and factory production testing by designing and assembling custom fixturing and cables.
Purchases components and equipment for engineers
Keeps labs organized
Qualifications
Qualifications
Associate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or equivalent experience required.
Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience required.
Basic laboratory skills - thru hole and surface mount component soldering, cable assembly, test set/setup construction and wiring
Experience with basic laboratory hand tools
IPC Board Inspection and Soldering certifications strongly desirable.
Experience with use of standard laboratory equipment: voltmeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, ...
Experience in single-mode optical fiber handling and fusion spicing.
Basic familiarity with MS Word and Excel
Works well in an engineering team environment.
Good time management skills. Able to work with minimum guidance once task is defined.
Good organizational skills - able to keep place and keep track of equipment and component purchases
Good oral and written communications skills.
A self-starter with the demonstrated ability to take initiative, who can proactively identify issues/opportunities and recommend actions.
Strong results orientation with a proven track record of flawless execution and strong attention to detail.
