The Burn Crew Leader coordinates the operations of a 22-person burn crew in wildland fire activities, as directed by the Stewardship Manager or other command position. Crew Leaders work part time on an as-needed basis.
The Crew Leaders will have leadership roles on prescribed burns throughout the Southern Blue Ridge area. The Conservancy supports Southern Blue Ridge Fire Learning Network partners on multiple controlled burns each year. Together with the 22-person as-needed burn crew, the Crew Leader helps fill a void of wildland firefighters for single or multi-day prescribed fire operations. These positions coordinate staff meeting times, oversee equipment preparation and rehabilitation, engine maintenance, radio programming, travel to burn sites and routinely have supervisory responsibility of crew during burns. Staffing needs for these positions could average 40-50 hours per operational period (bi-weekly) at the discretion of the Southern Blue Ridge Stewardship Manager. Operational periods are generally sporadic and clustered by opportune weather conditions, and no guarantee of a minimum number of opportunities is given or implied. The Crew Leaders will participate on opportunities only as their own schedules will allow, and thus participation on any given opportunity is not required.

In this role, you will function as both a leader and a member of a work team. You will lead the team by monitoring the progress of burn crew members toward achieving the fire management goals. You will be a key decision maker on the fire line based on your evaluation of fire behavior, available resources and judgment.
You may perform heavy physical work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.

The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the $25.00 per hour range. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate's actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges.
