Job Summary
Reporting to the Director of Operations Engineering and in collaboration with the engineering and operations teams, the Tooling Engineer is responsible for new tooling procurement, tooling documentation, standards development, production tooling support, and tool vendor management. The Tooling Engineer is responsible for bringing concepts defined by the product engineering group to a functioning mass production injection tool using standardized requirements and methods under the required budget. The Tooling Engineer oversees all parts of new product development related to injection tooling and supports the maintenance of tooling in mass production for the Enclosures Group.
Job Responsibilities:
New Tooling Management:
Coordinate new tooling to domestic and LCC vendors including new tooling quotations, kickoff, and development to mass production.
Support development of tooling standards, tool design checklists, and other documents supporting overall tooling management requirements.
Ensure tooling drawings are kept up to date for new tooling and changes and stored in a system accessible to operations and tooling teams withing the group.
Review new tool designs from vendors to ensure conformance to Tooling Standards and production needs that will allow for a successful molding life of customer production and service.
Attend new and existing mold and sampling tryouts on site and at outsource vendors as needed or deemed necessary and troubleshoot mold, molding, and assembly problems to determine root cause and countermeasures and needed improvements.
Analyze lab data to determine compliance with specifications and determine methods to correct in the mold if needed.
Coordinate engineering changes, repairs, tunings, and other mold improvements using In-house tool shop or approved external vendors.
Complete maturation of new tooling using systems, skills, and tooling methods to meet customer or company demand for timing, budget, and production facility needs.
Interact with other manufacturing, quality, tooling, project engineering and product design departments on a constant basis.
Vendor Correspondence / Administration of mold purchasing process - In collaboration with Purchasing, create POs and work with vendors throughout the mold creation process to ensure molds are delivered on time and on budget. Maintain excellent vendor relationship throughout. Support the acquisition, qualification, and development of new Tooling Vendors both LCC & Domestic.
Production Tooling Management & Technology:
New technologies - Constantly researching to remain abreast of new technologies related to mold making, design for moldability, simulation, plastics/additive technology, etc.
Assist and advise with quality issues concerning tooling and investigate and implement production and/or tooling improvements (Kaizen) and assist in coordinating engineering changes that require tooling modifications.
Mold maintenance - Provide engineering support to Toolroom for the ongoing maintenance and repair of existing molds and recommended preventive maintenance practices and cycles.
Estimate tooling costs for repairs and design changes and recommend or order spare parts as needed to aid in repairs and improvements of molds.
LCC Vendor Improvement/Conformance and general tooling support of current tooling issues.
Interact with other manufacturing, quality, tooling, project engineering and design department on a constant basis.
All other duties assigned as needed.
Job Requirements
Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field and 6+ years related experience.
Extensive Injection Molding knowledge in both tooling and injection processing.
Proficient with Solidworks or similar CAD program and ability to read and interpret 2D & 3D designs.
Ability to work in a cross-functional team in a fast-paced product development environment.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Good English verbal and written communication skills.
Travel is expected to be up to 30%.
