SUMMARY
Works aboard watercraft, such as switch boats and river boats, by performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Handles lines, ratchets, cables and wenches as needed to tie up vessel to another vessel, or rig, barge, or tow
Sweeps and washes decks
Lowers and man's lifeboat in case of emergencies
May stand watches while underway
Loads or unloads groceries and other supplies needed for the boat
Carries rigging, water hoses, and pumps to areas needed on boat or tow
Maintenance: Includes painting, chipping structures on boat as needed
Lubricates machinery and equipment
Splices and repairs cables and ropes
Examines cables that hold vessels in tow and tightens cables to ensure vessels are snug
Follows all rules of safety.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPEREINCE
High school diploma or equivalent; plus one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
A deckhand should know:
How to secure lines properly
How to tie towing lines and backing lines
How to lay fore and aft lines
Difference between port and starboard
How to properly draft barges
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees including helping pilot land tow via radio.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fraction and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written and/or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations.
