The Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering is looking to fill a Post Doctoral Associate position in Dr. Hseen Baled's research lab. Information on the position is as follows:
Job Summary: Samples of three waste materials (filter cake, nylon-Spandex fabric, and printed circuit boards) will be immersed in high-pressure CO2 that may also contain a small amount of dissolved water. The samples will then be rapidly de-repressurized. The samples may be subject to multiple immersion/depressurization cycles during this pressolysis treatment. The objective is to determine if pressolysis makes the samples more amenable to recycling by facilitating the separation of the constituents in each sample. This is accomplished by significantly altering the physical and/or chemical characteristics of at least one of the components in the waste material. Specifically, we intend to remove the detergent and mineral from the diatomaceous earth in the filter cake; we hope to remove the TPU fibers from the nylon fibers in the nylon-6-Spandex fabric; and our goal is to separate the glass, metallic, polymeric, and electronic components of PCBs be separated from one another primarily by foaming the cured epoxy.
Job Qualifications: Undergraduate and/or graduate degrees related to chemistry, chemical engineering, or polymer science or engineering. Multiple years of hands-on experience with high-pressure phase behavior and viscosity equipment. Multiple years of experience with the use of liquid and supercritical CO2 in a laboratory or pilot plant setting. Multiple years of experience with conducting reactions at elevated temperature and pressure. Ability to use analytical instruments and interpret their results.
PhD needed in what field(s): Chemistry or chemical engineering or mechanical engineering or material science or polymer science or polymer engineering.
