Description: Job Summary

Manages and coordinates departmental activities related to the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA) and Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA Accreditation process. Receives assignments and sets work priorities, coordinating them to meet deadlines to ensure an efficient workflow through the department. Reviews a wide variety of complex and technical issues concerning law enforcement standards and the accreditation process. Assigns, directs, and coordinates groups of employees to achieve plans of action, makes recommendations to the Chief of Police and command staff, and engages in other activities to meet compliance with applicable accreditation standards.

Position Description

  • Develops, writes, revises, and helps manage the department's catalog of policies and forms to meet accreditation standards, including written directives. Reviews existing policies, procedures, and processes to identify gaps in compliance with IACLEA/CALEA Standards, / legislative mandates, and judicial rulings.

    • Determines and develops appropriate proofs of compliance for accreditation standards, including type, frequency, and retention of necessary documentation.
    • Maintains master file and archive files for department written directives and maintains accreditation Standard Compliance Overview Form (SCOF) files.
    • Maintains hard copy files for departmental directives and updates, as necessary. Utilizes appropriate software applications to increase work efficiency and expedite information retrieval, including Power DMS, Lexipol, CAD, RMS, and other software.
  • Participates in regular conferences with the Chief and command staff on planning, data analysis, accreditation, and other related matters. Composes and/or edits a variety of correspondence, reports, memorandum, and other material requiring independent judgment as to content, accuracy, and completeness.
  • Assists with the preparation of the departmental annual budget by projecting the accreditation costs for the coming fiscal year. Consults with the Chief and command staff on building and equipment modifications for compliance purposes.
  • Evaluates program outcomes and changes systems, processes, and guidelines to ensure program success and relevance for department members.
  • Conducts program research, analysis, and data collection, and identifies program problems to explore possible alternatives for changes.
  • Develops and provides the Chief and command staff a monthly snapshot/dashboard on IACLEA/CALEA compliance progress, challenges, and timelines.
  • Participates in the IACLEA/CALEA University Police Accreditation Coalition (UPAC) to learn and share best practices among the network of accreditation professionals. May represent Harvard University at other work groups focused on compliance and accreditation. Attend meetings, trainings, and conferences related to IACLEA/CALEA standards, procedures, and developments.
  • Provides accreditation-related training and various types of presentations to department personnel, external partners, community groups and campus leadership. Develops and conducts training related to policy, procedures and processes for accreditation and professional standards compliance to ensure a clear understanding of expectations, accreditation processes, and appropriate follow through is being performed.
  • Works with campus Clery Coordinator to ensure compliance between parallel and competing concerns.
  • Perform other works as assigned


Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business / organization management, public administration, criminology or related field or equivalent experience


Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • 3 years of related experience or combination of experience and education
  • Be highly organized, detailed and structured in work product.
  • Strong understanding of MS Office Suite.
  • Strong communications skills and understand working in a very structured organization.
  • Be able to make complex decisions on competing issues to develop compliant work policies, procedures, and structures.
  • Ability to work independently with very little supervision as well as a strong ability to work in a team structure and lead the process as appropriate.
  • 5 years of experience in code compliance, preferred. Law enforcement experience, preferred.
  • An advance degree in similar field is preferred.
