The Programmer II will contribute to the development, maintenance, and support of applications and systems by performing intermediate-level computer programming tasks. The role focuses on enhancing programming skills, expanding application knowledge, and contributing to business process improvements. The individual will be responsible for writing programs to update databases and create interactive reporting tools. This position requires programming in SQL within both Unix and Windows environments, along with a variety of other technical tasks under moderate supervision.
Key Responsibilities:
Programming:
Perform intermediate retrieval programming, basic update programming, and report generation using SQL and PL/SQL.
Write programs for application-specific purposes, such as subsystem feeds, system integrations, and web applications.
Develop and maintain reporting tools for internal and external purposes.
Perform intermediate shell scripting tasks and support form development.
Contribute to CougarNet web support and basic Argos report development.
Compile programs in MicroFocus Cobol and C.
Documentation:
Create program documentation and end-user instructions.
Complete production control and internal documentation forms.
Update and close Footprints tickets as part of issue tracking.
Testing:
Develop test plans and perform program testing, documenting test results.
Perform advanced program debugging under moderate supervision.
Interact with clients as needed to resolve issues and gather requirements.
Tools & Technical Knowledge:
Gain proficiency with tools such as TOAD, secure FTP, and common desktop applications (Excel, Word, MS Access, etc.).
Learn basic Unix and Windows commands.
Use Telnet and Remote Desktop to connect to remote servers.
Problem Resolution Skills:
Use Ellucian Hub and other technical resources to troubleshoot and resolve issues.
Participate in 24/7 problem resolution and incident management as required.
Application Knowledge:
Study internal documentation, vendor materials, and listservs to expand technical application knowledge.
Work with senior IT staff and functional users to gain intermediate knowledge of applications and business processes.
Understand data security standards and practices.
Analysis and Design:
Under direct supervision, assist in program and report design.
Participate in client design consultations to define application requirements.
Typical Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Any combination that totals four years from the following:
60 semester hours or an Associate Degree in Computer Science or Information Systems (=1 year)and three years of experience
90-120 semester hours or Bachelor Degree in Computer Science, CMIS or related field (=2 years) and two years of experience
2. Specific coursework/experience in relational database programming (SQL and PL/SQL) and analysis, with exposure to HTML, CSS, Java, Java scripting, XML, C, data architecture and database relational design;
3. Two years of experience with any of the following operating systems: Unix, Linux, Windows Server
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to communicate effectively with technical team members;
Certification as an Oracle Developer is a plus;
Must be able to work and contribute in a collaborative team environment; Must be self-motivated and flexible in accepting duties and direction; Must demonstrate ability to apply technical programmatic solutions with moderate supervision.
