Department Summary


As the most-used service on campus and an essential component of education and research at the University of North Texas, the Libraries offer access to more than 6 million items (print and digital) along with expert personnel to assist patrons in achieving their academic and scholarly goals. We provide innovative programs and support to enhance the relationship between teaching and learning at the University of North Texas.


The Music Library supports the College of Music and the UNT community in providing outstanding collections of books about music, music journals, printed music, sound recordings from historic through contemporary formats, and music-related electronic databases. Special collections are a particular strength, emphasizing not only the many genres classified under Western art music and jazz, but also popular music and world music. Our dedicated full-time staff members and student assistants are available to provide access services and research assistance to patrons from UNT and beyond.

Position Overview


The UNT Libraries seeks an innovative thinker with strong people skills to plan, coordinate, create, and oversee the entry of high-quality metadata and digitization workflows for the UNT Music Library (http://www.library.unt.edu/music). Under the general supervision of the Head of Music Technical Services, the Coordinator of Music Metadata and Digitization will oversee the description of digital collections and digitization of physical collections, including hiring, training, and supervising student assistants.


The Coordinator of Music Metadata and Digitization, in consultation with the Head Music Librarian and Head of Music Technical Services, sets priorities for music metadata in accordance with established departmental and Library-wide policies and procedures and is responsible for keeping the metadata-related policies and procedures of the Music Library in tune with best practices of the metadata community. They advise on and contribute to prioritization of collections for digitization, coordinate preparation of materials for in-house and outsourced digitization, and take responsibility for the ingestion of digital materials into UNT's Digital Library.


The Coordinator of Music Metadata and Digitization contributes to music reference and other music public services activities as needed. Additionally, this position is responsible for professional development through scholarly research and publication, presentations, participation in national professional associations, and service.


Specific Responsibilities
In consultation with Digital Projects Unit and colleagues in the Music Library, sets direction and maintains standards for metadata creation for Music Library's digitized and born-digital collections, including audio recordings, video recordings, and digitized scores and documents.
Works with the College of Music to archive and make available their concert programs and their audio and video recordings, including managing metadata creation and file processing activities.
Trains, supervises, and reviews student assistants working on metadata projects.
Works with Sound Preservationist and Music Special Collections Librarian to plan the metadata for projects and coordinates digitization as appropriate.
Works with the unit and department heads to establish priorities related to assigned areas.
Fosters positive relations with faculty, students, and staff.



Minimum Qualifications


Bachelor's degree in music; ALA-accredited master's degree in library or information sciences, an international equivalent, or advanced degree in a related field.
Relevant experience in a music library.
Facility with metadata-creation schemas and workflows.
Knowledge of digitization processes.
Evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills.
Knowledge of major music reference sources.



Preferred Qualifications


Graduate degree in music.
Basic familiarity with jazz.
Knowledge of major issues related to digital preservation.
Familiarity with music cataloging using current standards and systems.
Knowledge of copyright issues as they relate to music.
Evidence of analytical and problem-solving skills.
Demonstrated ability to adjust priorities, take initiative, set goals, manage multiple projects and priorities judiciously, and make quick effective decisions in a fast-paced environment.
Proficiency in a Windows environment and facility with current and emerging technologies and applications.
Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish positive and productive collaborations.
Record of-or clear potential for-contribution to the profession with scholarly publications and/or presentations and through contributions to professional organizations.
