Senior Marketing and Business Development Manager
The Senior Marketing and Business Development Manager (Sr. MBDM) is responsible for managing the relationship between assigned practices and the Marketing and Business Development (MBD) Department, as well as providing support for a variety of MBD activities. This position will work alongside other Marketing and Business Development Managers and Marketing, Communications, and Business Development Professionals under the direction of the Director of Marketing and Business Development, and practice group leaders (and sub-practices) and other areas as may be necessary (“assigned practices”).
For the assigned practices, the Sr. MBDM is the primary point of contact for all marketing and business development requests and will partner with their MBD colleagues as an integrated team to ensure the attorneys receive high quality work product and a seamless service experience. In addition to relationship management, MBD practice support, and serving as a collaborative member of the MBD team, the Sr. MBDM is expected to maintain a strong working knowledge of the assigned practices’ capabilities, experience, clients and individual attorneys’ expertise. The Senior Marketing and Business Development Manager maintains professionalism and strict confidentiality in all client and firm matters.
We are hiring for two Senior Marketing and Business Development Managers. One for the Litigation department and another for the Financial Markets and Funds department.
This position may be located in our Chicago, New York or Washington D.C. office. Katten offers a hybrid work model, allowing the flexibility to work both on-site and remotely on a regular basis (KattenFlex).

Act as the MBD point of contact for lawyers from assigned practices, building and sustaining trusted advisor relationships with PGLs and key stakeholders.
Develop and execute annual strategic marketing and business development plans in collaboration with PGLs and the Director of MBD, ensuring alignment with firm priorities, tracking activities and progress, and following through on actions to achieve measurable results.
Proactively identify opportunities for external promotion or client development activities within assigned practices and partner with the appropriate MBD functional team members to execute on vetted opportunities and fully leverage their potential.
Partner with the Director of MBD on special projects aimed at enhancing processes, upskilling the team, and providing leadership within the department, fostering innovation and continuous improvement.
Develop and manage the annual marketing and business development budget for assigned practices, track ROI, and provide regular reporting to PGLs.
Actively participate in practice group meetings, contributing ideas, facilitating follow-up on opportunities, and promoting internal knowledge sharing within the practice and the broader MBD team.
Develop and maintain a thorough and specific understanding of the capabilities of assigned practices, including prior experience, clients and industries served and distinguishing characteristics.
Evaluate, execute, and manage sponsorship opportunities, strategic alliances, and partnerships, ensuring the firm capitalizes on all benefits to maximize ROI
Provide input and support on a variety of marketing and communications activities to ensure appropriate strategies and positioning are reflected such as directory listings, rankings and award submissions (Chambers, etc.), events, marketing collateral materials, and thought leadership, etc.
Partner with the pitch and proposal team and actively participate in RFP kick-off calls to help establish the response strategy for assigned practices.
Work with the firm’s public relations team to identify and leverage deals and case wins, industry trends, client relationships and other information appropriate for media outreach.
Work with events team and attorneys in assigned practices to develop client events and proprietary programming.
Collaborate with the events team to execute high-impact programming that aligns with practice goals; work with attorneys to ensure selection of the right target audience, speakers and topics.
In coordination with the Business Development team, support firm-wide business development programs including: Client Feedback, Client Service Teams, and lateral partner integration, as needed.
Contribute to department-wide initiatives to improve overall marketing and business development functions.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities, but contributes to the oversight of two Client Service Specialists.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business or related field, and ten or more year’s related experience are required; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Significant marketing or business development experience is required. Prior experience working in a large legal, financial or other professional services firm is preferred. Financial services industry knowledge and experience are also preferred.
Must be a motivated self-starter, exhibit a high degree of initiative and proactivity, and be comfortable and skilled at providing counsel on sophisticated business development strategy in several different legal areas.
Demonstrated ability to think creatively, introduce innovative ideas, and strategically approach business development and marketing initiatives. Able to bring fresh perspectives that drive impactful solutions and differentiate the firm in a competitive market.
When appropriate, ability and availability to regularly travel to other firm locations.
Outstanding interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. Must be skilled at developing meaningful, substantive relationships with a diverse group of attorneys and cultivating them over time. Ability to communicate with courtesy and diplomacy and exercise independent judgment in the handling of complex relationships.
Excellent project management skills in order to develop project plans, coordinate projects, communicate changes and progress, complete projects on time and within budget and manage project team activities.
Supervisory and managerial skills necessary in order to provide instruction, direction and training, determine work priorities, and coordinate the activities of the team.
Ability to understand and support the firm’s goals, services, culture and strategy in order to represent the firm in a positive, professional manner.
