Job Description:

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Rehabilitation Therapies is seeking a Staff Nurse (RN) for Pulmonary Rehabilitation. A Staff Nurse will assess patients' nursing care needs, plan and provide care based on needs, evaluate effectiveness of care provided, and integrate nursing theory and research into clinical practice.


Selective candidates are eligible for a sign-on bonus up to $10,000. Current UI employees are not eligible.


Characteristic Duties of our Staff Nurses include but are not limited to:

  • Applies nursing theory to the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of patient responses to health and illness.
  • Assesses patient health care preferences and expectations.
  • Collaboratively coordinates the continuum of care across settings.
  • Develops individualized treatment plans based on patient condition, age, and psychological, educational, and socioeconomic conditions that prescribes interventions to attain expected outcomes.
  • Implements patient treatment plan according to patient priorities, which includes interventions identified through nursing diagnoses. Documents/reports interventions and patient/family response.
  • Implements nursing interventions according to department, division, and/or unit policies, procedures, and protocols to maintain safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Collaborates and integrates contributions of patients and families into multidisciplinary patient care plan.
  • Develops, coordinates, and implements transfer/discharge planning throughout episode of care.
  • Follows universal precautions.
  • Clinical Practice:- Incorporates scientific, behavioral, and humanistic principles for application to clinical practice.
  • Utilizes, adheres, and supports departmental standards and practice guidelines.
  • Applies nursing theory to the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of patient responses to health and illness.
  • Supervises exercise session, monitoring program participants for appropriate responses to exercise. Monitors patients for critical changes and initiates appropriate emergency procedures.
  • Provides patient disease self-management training.
  • Implements emergency care procedures in potential or actual emergencies according to departmental policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Maintains skills/competency related to special equipment, medications, and procedures common to the patient population of the unit/division.
  • Evaluates patient's response to multidisciplinary care.
  • Uses evaluation data to revise and implement change.
  • Education:- Develops and implements patient/family teaching plan based on identified health education needs and the condition and age of the patient.
  • Evaluates and documents effectiveness of patient/family teaching. Revises plan of care.
  • Participates in the orientation of new nursing staff and the ongoing education of nursing personnel, as directed by the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program Supervisor.
  • Participates in formal and informal teaching with health care students.
  • Quality Assessment/Quality Improvement:- Integrates research findings into practice.
  • Applies quality improvement principals to improve patient outcomes.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities.
  • Responsible for identification of improvement opportunities.
  • Functions as a patient advocate.
  • Incorporates the principles of Service Leadership to ensure positive patient/customer relations.
  • Maintains confidentiality.
  • Practices within legal boundaries of the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Complies with personnel policies.
  • Evaluates and validates performance with Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program Supervisor and sets goals for work performance.
  • Commits to ongoing learning to maintain and expand own knowledge. Demonstrates willingness to strive toward proficiency in pulmonary rehab-related clinical competencies.
  • Participates in professional development activities.
  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Remains calm and constructive in conflict situations
  • Provides recognition and support for colleagues.
  • Incorporates the principles of Service Leadership to ensure positive patient/customer relations.
  • Adheres to UI Health Care policies regarding personal conduct, follows established leadership, remains responsive to instruction and coaching from supervisors and meets the standards of personal appearance

Required Qualifications

  • An Associate's Degree in Nursing, a Diploma in Nursing, a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, Professional Masters of Nursing and Healthcare Practice (MNHP), MSN/Clinical Nurse Leader or a Master's Degree in Nursing (MSN, MA) is required
  • 3-5 years clinical nursing experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Must be proficient in computer software applications. (ie: Microsoft applications)
  • Must be proficient in EPIC documentation
Certifications:

  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Certification in a role or specialty through a nationally recognized professional nursing certification body.
  • Bachelors of Science degree in Nursing is highly desired (or currently working to complete within 2 years) or Master's degree in Nursing is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide great patient centered customer service.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively in difficult and complex situations.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of UI Healthcare Clinical programs and services
  • Specialized degree, education and/or certification in pulmonary related field, e.g., medical intensive care experience, asthma educator certification.
  • ACLS certification
  • Basic knowledge of respiratory pathophysiology, exercise physiology, inhalers, nutrition, risk factors, physical activity guidelines, behavior modification strategies, and motivational interviewing/health coaching techniques.
  • Knowledge of and ability to promote use of educational programs/resources and other technologies to Pulmonary Rehabilitation services is highly desirable.
  • RN ambulatory experience
