Purpose of Position

The Department of Philosophy & Ethics at the University of North Dakota invites applications for a full-time, benefitted tenure-track Assistant Professor of Philosophy & Ethics. The position begins August 16, 2025, and is contingent upon availability of funding.


The department seeks to hire someone with a combination of areas of specialization and/or competency in American Philosophy, Environmental Ethics, Ethical Theory, Feminist Philosophy, and Philosophy of Race & Postcolonialism. Courses the successful hire will be expected to teach regularly include Environmental Ethics and Death & Dying.


This position carries a 3/3 teaching load. The successful candidate will teach in-person on campus and asynchronous online courses, maintain a robust research agenda, and participate in shared faculty governance and service.


The Department of Philosophy & Ethics offers courses covering diverse philosophical theories and methodologies, as well as their application to real world problems. We have particular strengths in ethics and social-political philosophy. Our courses represent the backbone of the liberal arts educational mission of the university. We offer two major tracks, one in philosophy and one in pre-law, as well as minors in ethics and philosophy.


Duties & Responsibilities

The successful candidate will contribute to the Department of Philosophy & Ethics through teaching, research, and service to the department, college, university, and community. The effort distribution is expected to be 60% Teaching (3/3 course load), 30% Research, and 10% Service. The successful candidate will contribute to the UND LEADS Strategic Plan through a commitment to strong teaching, community service, and meaningful scholarly activity. Required Competencies

Minimum Requirements

  • Earned Ph.D. in Philosophy by August 15, 2025

  • Successful completion of criminal history records check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in American Philosophy, Environmental Ethics, Ethical Theory, Feminist
    Philosophy, and/or Philosophy of Race & Postcolonialism

  • Prior experience and/or demonstrated potential to teach the following courses:
    Environmental Ethics and Death & Dying

  • Demonstrated knowledge in diverse philosophical perspectives

  • Experience teaching in-person and asynchronous online courses in philosophy

  • Commitment to excellence in teaching demonstrated through teaching portfolio

  • Evidence of a promising research agenda related to areas of expertise
