Position Summary: The Nurse Manager for the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Inpatient Unit (1JPW) plays a critical role in ensuring safe and effective patient care. This position provides both managerial and clinical leadership to the nursing team. The successful candidate will collaborate with interdisciplinary professionals, promote evidence-based practices, and contribute to the overall success of the unit.


Responsibilities:


  • Leadership and Management:
    • Provide visionary leadership to the nursing staff, ensuring safe clinical care delivery.
    • Foster a positive work environment that promotes teamwork, professional growth, and patient-centered care.
    • Collaborate with the Department Director to achieve unit goals and objectives.

  • Clinical Oversight:
    • Monitor patient outcomes, identify areas for improvement, and implement necessary changes.
    • Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and treatment planning.



  • Education and Resources:
    • Ensure that all staff have the necessary education, methods, and resources to excel in their roles.
    • Support ongoing professional development and continuing education.

  • Unit Specifics:
    • 1JPW is a 15-bed inpatient unit dedicated to psychiatric evaluation and care of child and adolescent patients aged 3 to 17 years old.
    • Patients on the child and adolescent unit experience a range of conditions, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, intellectual disabilities, substance use disorders, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.
    • Structured therapy, including dialectical behavior therapy, is provided by a full complement of professionals.
    • The unit design incorporates Circle School, a gymnasium, and outdoor activities to enhance patient experience and outcomes.

Salary: 6A Professional and Scientific Pay Structure A | University Human Resources - The University of Iowa (uiowa.edu)

Schedule: Schedule negotiable, requires flexibility to meet off-shift needs, call required.

Education or Equivalency Required
  • Master's Degree in Nursing or related field. If Master's Degree is in related field, Baccalaureate in Nursing is required.
  • If qualified applicant does not have Master's Degree in Nursing, the applicant will need to complete an advanced degree in nursing, health care administration, or business administration within five years of beginning this position.
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa or ability to obtain an Iowa license by date of hire is required.
Required Qualifications:
  • Considerable (3-5 years) experience in leadership/management roles to include prior experience working with regulatory bodies and survey readiness.
  • Previous RN experience with the psychiatric patient population
  • Demonstrates skills for leading change and implementation of evidence based practice.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and interdisciplinary team leadership skills.
  • Must be proficient in computer software applications
  • Certification in a role or specialty through a nationally recognized professional nursing certification body. If not currently certified must seek certification in a role or specialty as soon as eligible to sit for the exam
  • Professional job-related experience fostering or promoting a welcoming and respectful work/academic environment where people of all backgrounds and perspectives feel welcomed and appreciated; or demonstrated the ability to do so
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience working with both medicine and psychiatric patient population
  • Previous experience working in a large academic medical center
  • Experience working in a union environment
