THE JOB

The Apprentice Tankerman will work as an apprentice for the first year of employment and will work a varying five-day workweek with two scheduled days off per week. This position is an entry level position that will, after a period of training and demonstration of skills, be responsible for the loading and pumping of all liquid cargo barges, transferring other liquid cargos within the liquid product terminals and serving as a shoreside Person-In-Charge (PIC) for tug fueling operations and the Tidewater Industrial Complex (TIC). This position will also serve as a member of Tidewater’s Spill Response Team.

THE BENEFITS

  • Starting wage for the first 90 days is $38.36 per hour, $43.48 per hour for the next 180 days and $48.59 per hour for the next 90 days. Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship program, starting wage as a Tankerman is $51.15 per hour.

THE CATCH

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience working with tank barge or petroleum terminal operations is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain valid Coast Guard license (Merchant Mariner’s Credential with Tankerman capacity) and documents authorizing Person-In-Charge (PIC) status for the transfer of petroleum and other dangerous liquids, and to meet any additional standards required by any other authorized regulatory agency.
  • Knowledgeable of all vessels and procedures to transfer such liquids, including knowledge of piping systems, tankage, gauging devices and inspection and safe handling of hoses and loading spouts.
  • Ability to be qualified in emergency response and spill procedures.
  • Must have mechanical aptitude with the ability to perform maintenance and repairs on liquid barge equipment as needed.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills necessary to resolve issues and interact with personnel at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE) required for maintenance yard location, which may include ear plugs, protective eyewear, goggles, life vest, crush resistant footwear, hard hat, facial respirator, and personal flotation devices. Work is performed on the dock, tugboats, and barges as job duties require.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Transportation Work Identification Credential (TWIC) Card from the Department of Homeland Security.
  • Must have a valid drivers’ license and an insurable driving record.
  • Must be available on an on-call basis on nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to travel to upriver facilities if required (approximately 5%).
  • Employment offer subject to passing a pre-employment physical, drug screen, and driving record/criminal background check.
