The
Department of Agricultural Sciences at Texas State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Animal Science, with a specialization in Genetics/Genomics. This is a full-time, 9-month faculty appointment starting in fall 2025. The position requires the ability to teach undergraduate and graduate animal science courses, conduct research leading to high-quality peer-reviewed publications, and provide service to students, the department, the profession, and the university.
The university's Freeman Center, a 3,500-acre ranch located minutes from campus on the edge of the Texas Hill Country, is home to both commercial and purebred Santa Gertrudis cattle, cannulated steers, and small ruminants. These animals are utilized to support graduate and undergraduate research, as well as teaching activities. Current research at Freeman includes both basic and applied projects investigating alternative feedstuffs for ruminants, animal behavior, reproduction, and animal health. Additional resources at Texas State include the Institute for Molecular Life Sciences providing equipment and support for research concerning genetics, genomics, and gene expression. Current faculty also enjoy collaborations with researchers at other universities and stakeholders throughout the livestock industry including ranches, feedlots, abattoirs, and branded-beef programs.
The successful candidate will be expected to:Teaching:- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Animal Science, with a focus on Genetics/Genomics.- Mentor and advise students, including supervising M.S. student research and serving on thesis committees.- Develop new courses and contribute to ongoing curriculum development within the department.Research:- Establish and maintain a strong, externally funded research program in Animal Genetics/Genomics, particularly to address critical and emerging issues in the genetic improvement of food animal populations.- Collaborate with other faculty, industry stakeholders, and external partners to advance research in the selected area of expertise.- Disseminate research findings through publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at professional conferences.Service:- Participate in service activities at the departmental, college, and university levels, including committee work and student recruitment.- Engage in professional service activities within the broader Animal Science community.- Chair a student-organization and/or other student-facing initiatives, as appropriate.

- Ph.D. in Animal Science or a closely related field, with a focus on Genetics/Genomics.- Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Experience in mentoring students at both undergraduate and graduate levels.- Evidence of the ability to develop a strong, externally funded research program.- A record of or potential for publication in peer-reviewed journals.- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
- Postdoctoral experience or equivalent professional experience in Genetics/Genomics.- A track record of securing research funding.- Experience in curriculum development and teaching in a university setting.- Professional experience in the animal science industry or relevant agricultural sectors.
