Job Description:

The Department of Pathology at Medical Center North Liberty is seeking a Support Services Specialist to provide essential operational, technical support and supervision to Phlebotomy staff in the outpatient phlebotomy draw station at MCNL. Performs routine phlebotomy and assists other phlebotomists with performing difficult venipuncture procedures as necessary. Consistently role models excellence in service leadership. Collaborates closely with the MCNL laboratory manager to foster an environment conducive to the retention and recruitment of phlebotomy staff. Serves as an initial Phlebotomy subject matter expert for troubleshooting and problem solving related to operational, quality, or safety issues or challenges. Collaborates closely with the MCNL lab manager to plan for, implement and evaluate clinical and operational initiatives. This position is 100% time, Monday - Friday, first shift, 0630-1500.

Duties to include:

  • Performs all duties of a Phlebotomy Technician III.
  • Performs complex and difficult specimen procurement processes.
  • Monitors specimen collection techniques of staff and trainees in the MCNL Phlebotomy outpatient draw station.
  • Provides training and education on correct specimen procurement techniques to staff within the outpatient draw station and as necessary/requested to other patient care staff at MCNL.
  • Monitors and ensures Phlebotomy staff compliance with patient and specimen identification, specimen procurement and labeling according to established SOPs and regulatory requirements.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 1+ years of Phlebotomy experience.
  • 1+ years of experience in laboratory or health care supervision.
  • 1+ years of experience working directly in laboratory or health care operations.
  • Certification or eligibility for certification as a Phlebotomist Technician by ACA (American Certification Agency), AMT (American Medical Technologists), ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology), NCA (National Credentialing Agency), NCCT (National Center for Competency Testing) or NHA (National Healthcareer Association).
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment with effective leadership skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.



Desirable Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of phlebotomy experience is highly desired.
  • Prior experience directly supervising staff in a clinical laboratory setting or in a direct patient care or patient care support services setting is highly desired.
  • Prior experience working in a clinical laboratory setting is highly desired.
  • Prior experience working in an academic health center is desired.
  • Experience with Epic and/or Epic Beaker is desired.
