Position Overview
Work as part of the undersea hardware team focused on the product design and development of submarine optical fiber cable hardware, with special focus on qualification sample building and in-house testing.
Collaborate with engineering staff to assemble undersea hardware qualification test samples, including joints and couplings.
Understand and perform both mechanical and molding qualification testing as required including but not limited to fiberoptic splicing, test sample molding, radiographic inspection, high voltage, microtome, heat shrink, hydrostatic pressure and (tensile) load testing.
Serve as the Department 4200 Lab Safety Representative, maintaining the safety and functionality of the laboratory, crucial maintenance and periodic monitoring of x-ray dosage badges, maintenance of eyewash stations, etc.
Operate and maintain lab equipment used for qualification testing including but not limited to thermal ovens, high-power microscope, and molding extruders and chillers.
Perform, document, and train other engineers and technicians on the assembly of undersea hardware related to joints, couplings, equalizers and various special hardware.
Assist in the preparation and testing of precision optical fiber splicing using equipment such as power meters, OTDRs & OSAs.
Operate and maintain digital radiographic equipment used for producing x-ray images of qualification test samples and any other assemblies as needed
Assist in the dissection and review of post-testing qualification samples using assorted hand tools, as well as machine shop equipment including but not limited to drill presses and band saws
Provide clear and concise summaries of test results and other work output.
Maintain lab cleanliness and organization.
Responsible for maintaining inventory of consumable, tools, and regularly stocked parts used for qualification assemblies
Qualifications
Associate's degree or equivalent experience required, preferably in engineering
Proficient in use of MS Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
Must be able to work independently and as part of a multi-functional team to ensure goals are met.
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
Familiarity with undersea splicing components preferred
