Job Description:

The College of Engineering is seeking a Facilities Director to be responsible and accountable for the operations, maintenance and strategic planning of all College of Engineering (CoE) facilities. CoE facilities include the Seamans Center, engineering spaces in IATL and the Chemistry Building, as well as research center buildings such as the Driving Safety Research Institute, IIHR Wave Basin, Engineering Research Facility, Stanley Hydraulics Building, IIHR model annexes and off campus facilities (Operator Performance Laboratory, LACMERS IIHR facility, etc) . This position serves as the liaison with university facilities management and works with College of Engineering faculty, staff and building coordinators to address facility needs. This position leads the space planning and utilization for the college, is responsible for safety and compliance, and develops college wide processes and protocols in conjunction with senior leadership and appropriate stakeholder groups. This position will oversee personnel related to College of Engineering facilities.



Specific Job Duties and Tasks

  • Oversee and monitor spending of College of Engineering facilities budgets, including plans and budgets allotted for the repair/replace/remodel of college facilities.
  • Collaborate with CoE CFO for new building funding options or larger renovation funding options.
  • Lead the College of Engineering Space Planning Committee and perform strategic analysis of limited engineering space resources.
  • Identify and implement best practices in facilities management and space planning and utilization collegewide.
  • Oversee, coordinate, and/or manage facilities, furniture, equipment and systems needs such as janitorial, maintenance, pest control, health protection, building security, recycling, freight dock, telecommunications, room scheduling and set-up.
  • Serve as primary point liaison for all CoE facilities.
  • Work in conjunction with the UI Business Office to facilitate the annual Space Survey. Within College of Engineering, lead and coordinate with respective CoE staff for completion of space survey.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedural guidelines for facility access and usage collegewide, including teaching labs, classrooms, offices, research labs, conference/meeting rooms. Communicate policies and guidelines routinely.
  • Develop management reports/recommendations.
  • Ensure training and safety requirements are met.
  • Supervision of staff related to College of Engineering facilities.

Education Requirement

  • Master' s degree in facilities management, business, engineering, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.





Required Qualifications


  • A minimum of three years of experience in facilities management.
  • Knowledge of and experience with basic mechanical and electrical control systems, computing systems, and scientific equipment maintenance.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide effective customer service, including appropriate response to building emergencies.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising staff.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively at all levels of an organization.
  • A valid driver's license and continued compliance with the standards of the University Driving Policy is required.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively in a welcoming and respectful workplace environment.



Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of health, safety, fire code, OSHA, DNR, and NSF regulations relevant to an academic research environment.
  • Demonstrated experience creating and managing budgets.
  • Experience in managing the environment in research laboratories.
