This is a casual position with flexible hours and scheduled on an as-needed basis between August - May, averaging 100 hours per academic semester.
The Scene Shop Carpenter fabricates scenery for live entertainment. Working closely with the Technical Director of Production, the Carpenter's primary responsibility will be to support the construction, finishing, installation, and strike of scenery for the Theatre, Dance, and Music Departments' productions at the Eisner Center. The carpenter is responsible for following scene shop safety procedures and for reinforcing them for students, as well as, following standard construction methods used to produce theatrical scenery.
The Scene Shop Carpenter will read and interpret scale construction
drawings to create cut lists & material samples. They will construct scenic
and properties pieces using carpentry, welding, and material handling
techniques. They will perform quality control inspections of all constructed
or modified pieces in order to ensure accuracy and quality. They will
assemble & disassemble scenic and properties pieces in the various
performance spaces in the Eisner Center. They will assist with the storage,
organization, and transport of stock inventory items in the Eisner Center and
surrounding buildings. They will follow all related safety procedures and
assist student employees with the same.
* 1 year+ experience in the fabrication of theatrical scenery.
* Familiarity with safe working practices in a fabrication shop.
* Able to read & interpret theatrical construction drawings.
* 4+ years experience in the fabrication of theatrical scenery, 1-2 years in supervisory role (Lead Carpenter, Paint Charge).
* 1+ years experience working in a college/university theatrical setting.
* 1+ years experience teaching lab-style courses in theatrical scenic construction.
Physical Activity: Significant physical activity, including repetitive hand motion, walking, bending, climbing ladders, reaching overhead, pulling/pushing, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
Noise: There is sufficient noise to cause you to shout in order to be heard above the noise level.
Dust & Particulate: The work environment is dusty. Disposable dust masks will be supplied as needed, respirators are not required.
Hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to machinery & tools used to perform work, electrical current, working on ladders & elevated work platforms, or exposure to chemicals.
