Title: Assistant Director of Technology Operations



POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Director for Technology Operations is a technical leader and critical member of the Technology Services Division's (TSD) leadership team, responsible for overseeing the College's technology infrastructure, systems and operations to ensure the efficient and secure delivery of technology services to students, faculty and staff. This assistant director will collaborate closely with various College departments to align technology initiatives with the institution's strategic goals and core values.



ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Oversee the design, implementation and maintenance of the College's technology infrastructure, including networks, data centers, user support services and telecommunications systems. Ensure the availability, reliability and scalability of technology resources to support teaching, learning, student success and administrative functions. Develop and maintain disaster recovery and business continuity plans to ensure the College's technology can support institutional needs with minimal disruption to services. Collaborate with senior leadership to develop and execute technology strategies aligned with the College's mission, goals and core values, with specific emphasis on building an infrastructure that supports teaching, learning and working. Develop a deep understanding of the capabilities of the College's current software and hardware environment. Assess the gap between current usage and potential capabilities and recommend ways to maximize existing resources.


Lead and manage a team of technology professionals, providing guidance, mentorship and performance feedback. Make strategic purchasing decisions and recommendations based on the fiscal constraints of the College, while balancing the competing necessities of maintaining existing critical systems and investing in new and innovative technology. Administer the budget in alignment with the strategic plan and fiscal constraints. Develop budget proposals, spend within approved limits and consider opportunities for budget synergy with other departments.
Build partnerships across the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) system, including with central office staff and individuals performing similar work at other TBR institutions.


Lead TSD's compliance efforts by maintaining continuous awareness of the policy environment in which the department operates, knowing that changes in that environment will result in continuous evolution of the department's compliance requirements. Maintain the cyber incident response plan. Remain knowledgeable about latest innovations in technology relevant to the scope of the areas supervised. Cultivate a culture of continuous learning and improvement. Recommend ways that TSD can innovate in support of the mission, goals and core values of the College. Maintain awareness of all pending internal/external tickets, and investigate, respond and escalate tickets that exceed established service level agreements.


Oversee, lead and manage the work of third-party contractors providing technology services to the College. Evaluate and understand technical problems in the context of the College's overall priorities. Collaborate with academic and administrative departments to understand their technology needs and priorities. Translate technical issues for non-technical audiences. Communicate about planned and unplanned outages in non-technical language and in nearly real-time. Model excellent customer service and continually develop and improve customer service skills of subordinate employees. Foster a collaborative work environment that promotes innovation and continuous improvement. Promote professional development for TSD staff that is explicitly connected to the College's mission, goals and core values.



REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree


Three (3) years' experience as either a system administrator or a network administrator


At least two (2) years' experience managing direct reports



PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Prior management of a large team


Three (3) years' combined experience as both a system and network administrator



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of faculty, staff and students. Ability to establish and maintain an atmosphere of respect, responsibility, and responsiveness among supervised staff, including in their interactions with other departments within the College. Effective communication skills, including the ability to express ideas clearly and concisely in both oral and written communication. Ability to implement a root cause analysis approach to problem-solving among direct reports to identify underlying causes of ongoing technical problems and to use the information gleaned to drive targeted improvements. Must be able to work independently, demonstrate initiative and make substantive decisions quickly. Ability to learn and apply new information via routine collaboration with functional area leadership. Ability to serve as the first point of contact for technology-related emergencies 24/7.

Rate of Pay: $69,982.00 - $87,480.00 depending on experience
