The Worldwide Vice President, R&D for Specimen Management (SM) leads a multidisciplinary Research and Development (R&D) team in the design, development and lifecycle management of devices for specimen collection, and serves as a critical member of the R&D Leadership Team and Specimen Management Leadership Teams, Portfolio Decision Team (PDT) and Innovation Council.
The VP R&D SM reports into BD's EVP & CTO with dotted line reporting to the WW President, Specimen Management (SM). The role leads a team of over 100 associates comprised of Platform engineering and sciences (biosciences and material sciences). The team is accountable for Design and Development Engineering from Concept Development through to Design Transfer to high volume manufacturing. Specimen Management executes over 25 projects annually in support of a roughly $1.9B business. Notable products include BD Vacutainer Blood collection tubes and wingsets. SM is primarily focused on blood and urine specimen collection. As a leader in the Specimen Management business, the VP R&D works collaboratively with peers of several functions and has a strong influencing role over the direction of all product platforms and projects in the organization. The VP R&D SM collaborates closely with his/her commercial colleagues to develop new innovative products that continue to reinforce or establish product leadership positions and pursue high growth adjacent areas with new technologies in order to deliver category innovation.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Key responsibilities of this position include:
Provide leadership, optimal staffing, and overall management of SM device engineering and sciences professionals at our Franklin Lakes, New Jersey site.
Develop and drive talent management strategy for R&D. Lead talent management of the R&D SM organization, including coaching Team Leaders to develop them as business leaders. Attract and retain the very highest caliber of R&D engineers and scientists. Develop talent requirements and assume responsibility for planning, recruiting, training and motivating team members and fostering a culture of innovation, servant leadership, growth mindset and inclusion.
Establish strategy and direction for Specimen Management technology development and insource/outsource activities.
Demonstrate managerial ambidexterity by balancing long-term innovation with near-term product development and on-going lifecycle management.
Create and execute capability/capacity and organizational alignment plans and actions to optimally organize across disciplines as project and technology needs emerge and change over time. Routinely evaluate department capacity and capability relative to total demand for engineering & scientific capability and advise business leadership accordingly. Complete hiring manager activities as required.
Proactively identify customer, technologies and/or market trends in specimen acquisition and clinical diagnostic needs. Must be agile in redirecting R&D efforts to generate business value. Serves as a consultant to management on technology trends and risks.
Develop and administer performance expectations for Specimen Management R&D and managing spending to budget.
Identify synergistic strategic opportunities with development partners to access needed capabilities and optimize overall BD investments.
Develop and maintain key senior relationships with strategic development and contract engineering firms to optimize business opportunities for BD.
Interpret and administer policies, processes and procedures related to integrated solution technology development and delivery.
Ensure cross functional alignment with capabilities/claims in partnership with medical/regulatory.
Working with Quality and Regulatory, guide the R&D organization related to cross site work processes and adherence to quality systems.
Ensure compliance to applicable site quality and regulatory systems and requirements. Lead the organization with zero tolerance for defects.
Partner with Medical Affairs, Business Development, Innovation Teams, and Strategic Marketing to assess new technologies and other strategic opportunities, especially those "outside the home court" and aligned to market trends and customer needs.
Interact internally and externally with executive level management.
Influence policy making for new product development and product life cycle management related to lab automation, informatics and Product Engineering
Conduct technical due diligence of business opportunities including evaluation of partner and customer development proposals on issues of diverse scope for fit with existing platform capability and recommend design options to realize product development objectives.
Champion for practical application of the Global Product Development System (GPDS) and improve the process for maximum effectiveness. Drive execution of product development activities that are cross-functional and multi-site. Instill discipline and process to the product development effort to provide timely completion of milestones, remain within budget, and foster innovation and teamwork throughout the company.
Work with relevant counterparts and direct reports to effectively identify new Intellectual Property ("IP") initiatives and translate those into new products and/or procedures. Contribute to the development, implementation, and protection of IP strategy across the product portfolio, proposing responses to disruptive technologies or competitive threats that impact the Company's business.
Ensure product development aligns to support customer environment needs and that evolving customer needs and strategies are understood and accounted for in product and technical roadmaps.

The candidate must understand the "white space" and make appropriate strategy recommendations for the business/product portfolio. The job requires both strong technical skills and good business acumen - the ability to connect R&D efforts to a broader business strategy.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION : Minimum education required to perform duties.
The candidate will have a BS Degree in Engineering or Science, including Biology , Chemistry and/or Physics; MS or Doctoral degree highly preferred, with an MBA desirable.
EXPERIENCE : Minimum years required, both inside and outside, company, to perform duties.
Ten years of increasing responsibilities at the management level in research and development (life science tools, healthcare/medical devices, or in-vitro diagnostics preferred).
Proven record of product development and leadership in the life sciences and/or medical technology industry - must have successfully developed and launched new products and solutions
Specimen management or collection experience highly desired.
Experience with external co-development programs and understanding of best practices to ensure success with collaborative development efforts.
Comfortable executing all aspects of product development including design, development, verification and validation and other issues relevant to the final commercialized product.
Experience shaping and delivering a robust R&D portfolio and effective change leadership is ideal.
Experience deploying cross functional teams to drive innovation across organization and creating recognition programs to incentivize participation and collaboration.
Solid R&D experience employing modern product development methodologies across large multi-disciplinary teams.
Track record of actively partnering with the clinical community and industry partners to capture and develop new product ideas, as well as to help understand and communicate key technological advancements.
