Job Description:

The Department of Chemistry is seeking a Chemistry Center Manager (Instructional Services Specialist).


Reporting to the Administrator for Undergraduate Instruction, this position is responsible for managing the Chemistry Center and associated facilities and resources as well as the supervision of student staff. The Chemistry Center Manager serves as the primary communications hub for all chemistry courses and collaborates with department administration to perform duties to support chemistry instruction, including managing data in MAUI and scheduling courses.



Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and evaluate instructional materials. Consult with administration and faculty on development of new resources as needed.
  • Consult and collaborate with faculty, staff, and teaching assistants (TAs) regarding instructional needs and use of instructional technology.
  • Manage daily operations of the Chemistry Center with a high level of autonomy, including coordinating events and activities, communication, information management, and managing changes to policies and procedures.
  • Make decisions following instructor guidelines.
  • Participate, assist with, or facilitate programs and services that enhance the educational experience and retention of current Chemistry students.
  • Assist instructors and students of large enrollment classes by managing electronic resources such as MAUI and ICON.
  • Manage an instructional support facility, including financial and administrative responsibilities.
  • Monitor and manage course enrollments, staffing, and equipment budget adjustments.
  • Coordinate aspects of the undergraduate program including curriculum planning, course scheduling, classroom reservations, etc.
  • Coordinate with faculty, students, Student Disability Services, and Exam Services for accommodations including alternate examination arrangements.
  • Serve as a liaison to departments outside of Chemistry such as the Career Center, Academic Advising Center, Office of the Registrar, and Student Disability Services.
  • Hire, train, supervise, and manage the performance of undergraduate student staff.

Education Required


Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience; knowledge of chemistry basics is a plus but not required.



Required Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of administrative work experience.
  • Experience (at least 6 months) in and a working familiarity with office administration, including working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, demonstrated at a basic proficiency level.
  • Basic knowledge of and ability to set goals and take initiative.
  • Demonstrated working ability to manage multiple concurrent objectives, projects, groups, or activities, making effective judgments as to prioritizing and time allocation.
  • Demonstrates high attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Working experience with coordination of specialized events and activities, communication, information management, and changes in policies and procedures.



Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working in an academic environment is desired but not required.
  • Familiarity with University of Iowa systems, such as MAUI and ICON.
  • Basic knowledge of social media necessary to assist with managing departmental social media accounts.
