Description: Position Description

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Nursing and under the direction of the allergist, the registered nurse for the Allergy Clinic provides care to the patient population of Harvard University Health Services according to department guidelines and protocols.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

NURSING ASSESSMENT:

  • Performs nursing assessment of current and/or continuing problems.
  • Documents nursing assessment of current and/or continuing problems.
  • Reviews medical record for pertinent previous and current medical information.
  • Interviews patient regarding pertinent past medical and/or surgical history inclusive of allergies and medications.


TREATMENT PLAN OF CARE:

  • Establishes and documents individualized patient treatment regimen.
  • Demonstrates an ability to work effectively and communicate frequently with other members of the patient care team.
  • Demonstrates collaboration and planning with patient, family, multidisciplinary team and community providers to provide care needs.


IMPLEMENTATION:

  • Adheres to clinical guidelines and protocols of the Allergy Clinic.
  • Completes work assignments in given time.
  • Demonstrates accountability for problem resolution.
  • Demonstrates collaborative relationships with all members of the work team.
  • Maintains a smooth, organized flow of the clinic.
  • Maintains pharmaceuticals in collaboration with other members of the health care team.
  • Provides and documents patient and family education related to disease, prevention techniques, medication and treatment regimens.
  • Communicates in writing and/or verbally individual patient's response to treatment.
  • Documents all care provided in a concise and complete manner.
  • Acts as a liaison between HUHS allergist and private allergist.
  • Administers allergy immunotherapy according to policy and procedure.
  • Administers allergy skin tests according to protocol, policy and procedure and under the supervision of the allergist.
  • Updates problem and medication list as necessary.
EVALUATION:
  • Provides oral and written communication of patient's response to treatment plan.
  • Reevaluates treatment plan as needed.
  • Monitors patient satisfaction and responds accordingly.
  • Demonstrates improvements in personal performance and clinic operation based upon input from patient/family/team/supervisor.


Basic Qualifications

  • Graduate of accredited nursing program
  • Minimum of 1 years relevant work experience


Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing
  • Minimum two years experience in acute care nursing and experience in a clinical or ambulatory setting with allergy experience.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, intermediate Excel skills
  • Knowledge of and previous experience working with an electronic medical record
  • Ability to organize tasks, problem solve, and respond in times of multiple demands and urgent situations

  • Participates in development and revision of policies procedures and protocols.

  • Maintains licensure and continuing education requirements.
  • Acts as a resource person for immunization and desensitization information for nursing and medical staff.
  • Functions as a liaison between the part-time allergist and patients.
  • Attends staff meetings and educational offerings required by the Department.
  • Participates in organizational performance improvement activities.
  • Provides coverage to other areas as necessary.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Acts as a preceptor and participates in the orientation of new personnel.
  • Plans for time off in advance and according to clinic policy.
  • Provides proper notification for absences or tardiness.
  • Is punctual and prepared for duties at start of shift.
  • Assumes responsibility for transferring work assignment to another staff nurse when leaves from work are planned.
  • Demonstrates caring and willingness to help in all interactions.
  • Cooperates and complies with goals/projects of clinic and department.
  • Utilizes time productively.
  • Is flexible and responsive to the needs of the clinic and department in regard to work schedule.
  • Maintains professional conduct and appearance.
  • Compliance: Understands the expectations and professional responsibilities of the department. Uses the standards, practices, and procedures of the department. Complies with HUHS educational and training requirements. Reports non-compliance incidents to the supervisor, manager, and/or Compliance Officer.


CLINICAL SKILLS:

  • Performs allergy testing according to policy and procedure.
  • Performs allergy immunotherapy according to policy and procedure.
