Digital Media Producer - Gies College of Business




Teaching and Learning




Job Summary

The Digital Media Team is responsible for translating faculty expertise and course learning objectives into high-quality media content for asynchronous delivery. This role partners with Gies faculty, Learning Designers, and Graphics & Motion Designers to produce instructional video content for Gies College of Business's online educational portfolio. Works closely with faculty members to facilitate a final, edited deliverable that adheres to branding and accessibility standards. Serve as an executive producer over assigned projects. Mentors junior co-producers and supervises hourly employees.
Duties & Responsibilities

Instructional Media Design


  • Coordinate instructional media design projects from inception to completion, and maintain a large volume of media files and project tracking documents.

  • Responsible for the coordination between media production and instructional design.

  • Collaborate with faculty on storyboards, scripts, PowerPoint slides/Edit Decision Lists (multi-column scripts), and planning documents to facilitate effective integration of online learning content

  • Offer video-driven creative design suggestions that are part of the collaborative development of the course's curriculum plan and syllabus

Instructional Media Development

  • Serve as lead producer on standard Teaching & Learning developments, including new course development, course redesign, and curation of existing content.

  • Serve as lead producer or co-producer on specialized video projects outside of learning content, such as promotional videos, example reels, internal and faculty training videos, and other specialized projects as assigned.

  • Provide faculty with consultation and support around faculty-generated content such as home studio setups, simple field recordings, weekly course updates, self-service studio training, and basic video editing software

Internal Support

  • Provide guidance on essential, internal systems and processes of the Digital Media sub-unit that require limited ongoing attention. Based on sub-unit needs and at the guidance of the Senior Digital Media Manager

  • Assists in research on instructional media best practices, technologies and multimedia hardware/software to support teaching and learning.

Supervision & Coordination

  • Supervise, mentor, and assign work to hourly Digital Media staff

  • Mentor assigned Associate Digital Media Producers and Assistant Digital Media Producers

  • Host bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with assigned hourly Digital Media staff

Training

  • Provide shadowing for newly hired DMPs, Associate DMPs, and Assistant DMPs

  • Lead the development and maintenance of internal and external process documentation

  • Lead the development of faculty-facing documentation related to development processes related to working with the Teaching & Learning Digital Media sub-unit.

Communication

  • Follow course production schedules and deadlines set by development sub-unit and/or other members of leadership. Provide regular progress updates to direct supervisor; alert direct supervisor, Project Manager, and relevant sub-unit members of any anticipated or realized delays in production

  • Support short and long-term strategies for training programs related to best practices in media development.

Other Duties

  • Participate in professional development

  • Other duties as assigned


Additional Physical Demands

Physical Requirements: Movement and placement of production equipment requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Field recordings and occasional live events may require the ability to stand and move around for extended periods of time.
Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in education, educational psychology, or the humanities such as history, political science, literature, journalism, communications, philosophy, media production, or a closely related field.
AND
Six (6) months of experience which included any of the following areas professional writing or editing, audiovisual design and/or production, design and/or production of evaluation tools, educational programming, curriculum development, or classroom teaching

OR

Baccalaureate degree in education, educational psychology, the humanities, media production, or a closely related field.
AND
Eighteen (18) months of experience which included any of the following areas professional writing or editing, audiovisual design and/or production, design and/or production of evaluation tools, educational programming, curriculum development, or classroom teaching

Preferred Qualifications

Master's or terminal degree in media production or a related field

Experience developing instructional media in a higher education environment; Experience using XML files to roundtrip projects between non-linear editing software and color correction software; Experience organizing, properly storing, and adhering to naming and folder hierarchy standards in a network server environment; Experience working in a milestone-driven media production environment; 1 year of supervisory experience.

3 years actively working in video production, including recording and editing; Experience recording in a studio and on location, including camera operation, lens selection, lighting design, and microphone placement/audio recording; Solid understanding of safety practices related to setting up cameras, lights, and other video production gear.

Adobe Certified Professional in Digital Video Using Adobe Premiere Pro

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Advanced knowledge and proficiency with non-linear video editing software • Basic knowledge of still and motion graphics manipulation, including PowerPoint, lower thirds generation, and designing text natively in video editing software • Knowledge of setting up and shooting in a variety of locations with different environmental circumstances • The ability to troubleshoot technical issues and quickly resolve them or pivot to other solutions



Appointment Information


This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 3289 - Instructional Development Specialist position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the search close date. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience while also considering internal equity. The budgeted salary range for the position is $58,000 to $64,000.


Hybrid work options may be available for this position; however, must be available to be onsite at the University Illinois campus based on operational needs.
