Job Description:

The Department of Finance and Management Information Systems (FNIS) of the Marilyn Davies College of Business (MDCOB), at the University of Houston- Downtown (UHD) invites applicants for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor position in Risk Management and Insurance (RMI) to begin in August 2025. 

The candidate selected will have teaching responsibilities including but not limited to: Insurance Operations, Property/Casualty, Life and Health, Enterprise Risk Management, and other courses to meet department needs. Candidates with experience or interest in growing enrollment in the program, partnering with industry, experiential learning opportunities for students, success in seeking grants or externally funded research, and in developing RMI curriculum are strongly preferred. Candidates with an interest or proven track record in data analytics, risk management, and insurance research are encouraged to apply. Candidates must be successful or demonstrate strong potential to conduct discipline-related research consistent with AACSB scholarly academic status. The ideal candidate should demonstrate experience or interest and willingness to work with others to promote the advancement of the college, university, profession, and community through service-related activities. 

The position requires teaching RMI courses during the daytime, evening, and weekend hours, both in person and online.  The home campus for this position is the Downtown Houston campus, but the candidate selected may also have teaching assignments at UHD’s Northwest campus. 

The MDCOB is accredited by AACSB and enrolls more than 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The department offers majors and minors in Finance, Information Systems, Economics, and Risk Management. We are nationally recognized for insurance and risk management and have an active chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma International Risk Management, Insurance, and Actuarial Science Collegiate Fraternity.

Required Qualifications:


  • Applicants should have a terminal degree in Risk Management, Insurance (actuarial science, finance), or a closely related field from an AACSB-accredited business school or should be working towards one having reached the all-but-dissertation (ABD) status.  The doctorate must be completed by the date of appointment in Fall 2025

  • Demonstrate a record of, or potential for, scholarly research and publications in discipline-related peer-reviewed journals

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Experience in teaching a variety of risk management or insurance courses

  • Evidence of taking initiative or leadership in developing insurance or risk management curriculum

  • Demonstrate commitment to pedagogical best practice initiatives and instructional excellence in teaching

  • Experience in receiving external research funding

  • Experience serving on department/college/university committees as well as other services to the profession and the community

  • Professional work experience in risk management or insurance
