This position performs a wide range of custodial maintenance tasks under the general supervision of a department supervisor. The Custodian ensures that the University facilities are maintained in a clean, safe, orderly, and professional manner consistent with current cleaning standards. The Custodian must be able to use several types of cleaning equipment and materials in addition to providing manual labor associated with cleaning-related tasks.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Employment duties will include, but not be limited to the following:
Perform general cleaning tasks such as trash removal, dusting, furniture cleaning, glass cleaning, pressure washing of walls and disinfection, which requires the ability to stand, walk, crouch, bend, and have dexterity with arms and hands
Perform various floor cleaning tasks such as dust mopping, scrubbing, vacuuming, spot removal from carpets, spray buffing, burnishing, stripping, resealing, and refinishing floors, which requires the ability to stand, walk, crouch, and bend for extended periods
Clean and disinfect restrooms, including fixtures, showers, tubs, walls, ceilings, and floors
Replenish paper products and soap
Ability to bend, twist, reach overhead, and scrub with rotating motions of hand and arms
Empty trash receptacles, dispose trash into compactors and/or dumpsters, and bag trash for proper disposal; requires walking, bending, and lifting of heavy bags and containers as well as ability to lift 25 pounds independently and 50 pounds with a helper
Perform routine maintenance of custodial equipment and supplies, which requires dexterity with hands
Unlock doors to perform cleaning inside secured areas and ensure doors are locked after cleaning these areas
Move furniture, which requires heavy lifting, pushing, and pulling, up to 25 pounds independently and up to 50 pounds with a helper
Report hazardous conditions and facilities in need of repair to appropriate staff, which may include submitting or recommending work orders and checking supply levels; when working within on-campus residential buildings, responsible for reporting concerns related to on-campus residents
Respond to student and other user groups' issues and concerns in a supportive, professional, timely and problem-solving manner
Maintain a working knowledge of custodial methods, supplies, and equipment to implement them cost-effectively
Participate in training and quality improvement teams to promote continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices; assists in on-the-job training of new staff on routine procedures
Assist and perform light maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs, adjusting furniture, or other similar activities, which may require the use of stepstools or ladders to reach ceilings
Maintain a working knowledge of custodial work methods, supplies, and equipment, and implementing them in a cost-effective manner
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, students, and the university community
Abide by and comply with university policies and procedures
Perform special and other assignments as directed
Required Skills
Ability to follow written and oral instructions in English and perform custodial duties without direct supervision
Ability to use a variety of cleaning chemicals in a safe manner, according to manufacturer's specifications
Ability to operate carpet vacuums, floor machines, carpet extractors, wet/dry vacuums, pressure washers, and associated cleaning tools and power equipment
Ability to apply recognized standards of good practice relevant to matters of safety, security, and custodial techniques
Ability to effectively plan and coordinate multi-task requirements and meet self and pre-imposed objectives and deadlines
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, students, and the university community
Ability to walk and climb stairs and provide manual labor necessary to fulfill job functions; many buildings have multiple floors with stairs and no elevators
Ability to work in environments with extreme temperature and humidity common in Florida and may work in buildings without air conditioning, heating, or other comforts; may work in areas that are dusty, noisy, and areas that may have unpleasant odors
Required Experience
High school diploma or GED preferred but not essential with appropriate experience
One (1) year of experience in custodial work; experience in a multi-building custodial environment preferred, or an equivalent combination of experience and training
