Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The Department of Art & Art History is a dynamic center for research, teaching, and learning within the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Department includes Art History and Studio Art and has 21 full-time faculty and 7 staff members. The Department supports BA, BFA, and MFA degrees in Studio Art, and BA, MA, joint MA/MSLS, and PhD degrees in Art History.

Position Summary:

The Department of Art & Art History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking candidates for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor in Latin American art history and/or Pre-Columbian art history. We seek a dynamic scholar with expertise in the art and visual culture of Pre-Hispanic America or colonial or modern Latin America. The successful candidate will show a strong commitment to teaching and research and will contribute to our vibrant academic community while expanding our current fields of art historical expertise. A demonstrated engagement with evolving directions in the field will be of particular interest. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses, including a survey of Pre-Columbian and/or Latin American art history; to maintain an active and productive research profile; and to contribute to departmental and university service.


The University of North Carolina has substantial resources to support this position including relevant collections in the Ackland Art Museum, the Davis and Sloane Art Libraries, the Institute for the Study of the Americas, and the UNC-Duke Consortium in Latin American and Caribbean Studies. The teaching load for tenured and tenure-track faculty members is two courses per semester. Service responsibilities include contributing to departmental committees, advising undergraduate and graduate students, and participation in shared governance.


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Ph.D. in art history or closely related field with a specialization in Latin American and/or Pre-Columbian art history.

The ideal candidate would demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching and a commitment to innovative and inclusive pedagogical practice; a strong research profile with a record of, or clear potential for, scholarly publication and presentation; and an ability to contribute to the department's interdisciplinary and collaborative research environment.
