Job Description:

Assistant Professor, Creative Nonfiction/Documentary Literary Arts

Location:

Hanover, NH

Open Date:

Sep 13, 2024

Description:

The Department of English and Creative Writing at Dartmouth College invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position as Assistant Professor. We seek a teaching practitioner in the genre known sometimes as "creative nonfiction," sometimes as "literary journalism"-a genre encompassing the essay, the lyric essay, the reported essay, the personal essay, the graphic essay, and reportage. Applicants' primary work should be in nonfiction; we especially welcome applicants who work in audio documentary and new media. Responsibilities include teaching introductory and advanced creative nonfiction courses as well as developing new courses within the creative writing curriculum.  The person in this position will also play a major role in advising and mentoring creative writing students and advising senior creative writing projects.

The Department of English and Creative Writing is comprised of 27 tenure-line faculty and six teaching faculty. Dartmouth is on the quarter system and faculty teach four courses per year over four quarters. The department is known on campus for its focus on teaching and for close relationships between students and faculty. Within the department, the Creative Writing program's workshops offer young writers the kind of intimate and collaborative experience that draws students to Dartmouth. Most creative writing concentrators write honors theses, and every member of the Creative Writing faculty participates in the supervision of these theses. As a group, the Creative Writing faculty also run an active reading series that enables us to invite to campus an incredible range of writers. We are particularly interested in applicants with a proven interest in bringing to their teaching, mentoring, and writing critical perspectives reflecting the experiences of groups who have been historically underrepresented or marginalized in higher education.

Dartmouth is committed to academic excellence and encourages the open exchange of ideas within a culture of mutual respect. People with different backgrounds, life experiences, and perspectives make the Dartmouth community diverse, which enhances academic excellence. Applicants should address in their cover letter how their research, teaching, service, and/or life experiences prepare them to advance Dartmouth's commitment to diversity in service of academic excellence.

Qualifications:

Among the qualifications required for appointment is an MFA or equivalent degree or experience. The primary qualification is a strong history of publication or production. Teaching experience in creative writing, English, journalism, media, or related fields is preferred, but comparable experience will also be considered.

Application Instructions:

Please submit all materials electronically via Interfolio. Letters may be addressed to Prof. Jeff Sharlet.

  1. Cover letter addressing relevant professional experience and future plans as well as how the applicant's research, teaching, service, and/or life experiences prepare them to advance Dartmouth's commitment to diversity in service of academic excellence.
