About the Psychology DepartmentThe mission of the Spelman College Department of Psychology is to prepare students for the service and study of Psychology. We seek to empower women to lead and effect positive change in the world by instructing our students in the ethical, systematic study of behavior and mental processes, and in the application of Psychology to community and global issues, with the expectation of intellectual engagement and academic excellence. The Department has 17 full-time faculty members (10 tenured). Collectively, the Psychology Department faculty have expertise in approximately eight Psychology subfields, ranging from Clinical Psychology to Quantitative Psychology.


Position Description:


The Department of Psychology at Spelman College is seeking to fill a position at the rank of Assistant Professor with an anticipated start date of August 2025. Faculty should be teacher-scholars who are dedicated to excellence in teaching and to the continued enhancement of the academic environment for students and colleagues. All candidates are expected to have a demonstrated interest in liberal arts and sciences education, be able to contribute effectively to undergraduate teaching, advising, and mentoring, assist in curriculum development and assessment, provide service to the department and College, as well as be active in scholarly, creative, and/or research productivity appropriate to a liberal arts environment. The successful candidate should have demonstrated scholarly productivity with the potential to secure external funding and to engage undergraduates in their scholarship, research, or creative pursuits.
We are seeking someone with a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology or Counseling Psychology or related fields. The ideal candidate is expected to teach clinical or counseling related courses (e.g., Abnormal Psychology, Psychometrics, Forensic Psychology) as well as courses in psychology of race, gender, and/or human sexuality (e.g., Psychology of Women, Psychology of the African American Experience, Human Sexuality). Preference will be given to those whose research focuses on areas of diversity, such as (but not limited to) the study of race, culture, gender, and other identities using an intersectionality theoretical approach.
