Summary of Duties:


The Friesen Lab at Washington State University seeks a Staff Scientist that will contribute expertise in microbial genomics, microbial ecology, and plant-microbe interactions in service of a dynamic externally-funded research program focused on plant and soil health with an emphasis on nitrogen-fixation.





Required Qualifications:




  • A PhD in computational biology, molecular biology, microbiology, plant science, ecology, evolution, or a related discipline.




  • Two or more years of directly related experience and background. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.




  • Publications in the field of computational biology, molecular biology, microbiology, plant science, ecology, evolution, or a related discipline.




  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.




  • A commitment to cultivating a diverse and inclusive community.






Preferred Qualifications:




  • Skills in bioinformatics and data management, including high-level proficiency in R, data visualization, and -omics computational pipelines.




  • Experience in collecting data and samples in field settings, including interacting with farmers and land managers.




  • Laboratory skills in molecular biology including PCR, qPCR, high-throughput nucleic acid extraction, and next-generation sequencing.




  • Knowledge of beneficial plant-associated microbes and biological nitrogen fixation, especially including the molecular biology and genetics of nitrogenase.




  • Expertise in microbiology, including cultivation and characterization of bacteria from plant and environmental samples.




  • Experience providing mentorship to students and interns




  • Thrives in and contributes to a collaborative and mutually supportive team environment




  • Self-motivated and able to accomplish goals while balancing multiple projects




  • Passion and enthusiasm for the mission of furthering resilience in agroecosystems and wild ecosystems for the benefit of society

Annual Salary:


$65,000.00 - $72,000.00



In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.
