Job Description:

General Summary:



Under the supervision of the Waste Supervisor, the Waste Handler is responsible for collecting, separating, containing, transporting, processing and/or shipping solid waste & regulated medical waste (RMW) in accordance with relevant department and hospital procedures and all regulatory requirements



Principal Duties and Responsibilities:





  • Collects, separates, contains, labels and transports solid waste, medical waste & recyclable goods from generation points to specified collection location

  • Empties, relines, & cleans solid & medical waste containers according to department procedures

  • Ensures that all medical waste is scanned through the radiation monitor and compliant prior to processing or shipping.

  • Segregates pathological & chemotherapeutic waste for containment prior to shipping offsite for incineration.

  • Monitors available waste compactor capacity; alerting Supervisor to ensure that unit is emptied before reaching full capacity.

  • Operates solid waste and soiled laundry chute systems according to department protocol.

  • Operates OR waste lift according to department protocol

  • Separates, contains, seals, labels, weighs, & stores high-risk infectious (red bag) waste for vendor pickup to be incinerated



  • Operates solid waste compactor safely according to department procedure



  • Separates recyclables (glass, metal, paper, cardboard, etc.) for pickup. Operates baler according to department procedure for recycling cardboard/plastic



  • Secures dysfunctional or unsecured equipment against unauthorized use. Reports breakdowns to supervisor



  • Cleans and disinfects medical waste carts and totes. Maintains waste area facility in a clean and orderly condition; sweeps and cleans area at the end of each shift.



  • Assures safe working conditions at all times as designated by the SOP; utilizes safety equipment and/or protective equipment as directed (i.e. safety gloves and eye protection), follows defined safety procedures.





  • Performs other similar or related duties that may be assigned or as necessary






Qualifications

Qualifications:





  • Basic ability to speak and understand English (oral & written).

  • Secondary education (or GED) preferred.

  • 3 - 6 months experience preferred.

  • Able to understand and apply regulations and codes governing medical waste handling.



Skills and Abilities Required:




  • Requires physical ability to bend, stoop, reach & climb ladders. Must be able to lift & carry more than 50 lbs repetitively.

  • Must be able to operate waste chutes, lift, compactors & baler; perform independently with intermittent supervision; and establish own work plan and priorities following established procedures.




Working Conditions





  • Constant exposure to hazardous & infectious materials in the forms of fumes, human and animal waste, blood & body fluids, sharps, etc.

  • Working in a coverall uniform with personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Exposed to extreme temperatures, both hot & cold



  • Denotes essential functions
